Blast from the Past Review: Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed #7

What they say: In a frozen wilderness steeped in darkness, the lines between good and evil, lover and enemy, are never black or white but drawn in Shades of Midnight.

Something inhuman is stalking the frigid Alaskan wilds, leaving unspeakable carnage in its wake. For bush pilot Alexandra Maguire, the killings stir memories of a horrific event she witnessed as a child and evoke in her the inexplicable sense of otherness she has long felt within herself but never fully understood . . . until a darkly seductive stranger with secrets of his own enters her world.

Sent from Boston on a mission to investigate the savage attacks and stop the slaughter, vampire warrior Kade has his own reasons for returning to the frigid, forbidding place of his birth. Haunted by a secret shame, Kade soon realizes the stunning truth of the threat he faces–a threat that will jeopardize the fragile bond he has formed with the courageous, determined young woman who arouses his deepest passions and most primal hungers. But in bringing Alex into his world of blood and darkness, Kade must confront both his own personal demons and the even greater evil that could destroy all he holds dear.

What I say: I wasn't sure about Shades of Midnight because Kade was a little known entity and I wasn't sure how interesting a story based in the middle of nowhere could be. Well I'm currently eating a huge slice of humble pie as Kade and Alex's story was a thoroughly different, yet extremely interesting edition to the Midnight Breed series.

Kade is sent home to Alaska to investigate a series of brutal murders, which are potentially Breed or Ancient related. Alex (Alexandra) and has been living in Alaska since fleeing from past tragedies when she was a child.

I liked Alex because not only is she fearless, she's also a kick ass pilot and has a whole set of useful skills. Alex and Kade have an instant connection, helping each other to move on from their past. We also meet Alex's best friend Jenna, who I expect will have an important part in the next book.

Kade has spent his life in the shadow of his twin brother, never managing to meet his father's high expectations. Kade's Breed power is uber cool; he can communicate with animals. I kept thinking of feral children growing up with wolves.

A LOT happens in terms of the Order, Dragos and the Ancient, but Lara Adrian poses far more questions than she answers, setting up the next instalment nicely.

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Forget about the s**t Gideon turned up on this asshole," Kade said. "We'd be in the right to waste him just for going out in public dressed like that."
  • "I don't have any shrinkage issues." No, this was definitely not a man who'd have the slightest insecurities about his masculinity.
  • Kade knew as much as possible about engine cowlings as he did knitting.
