A Little Thing Called Love - Review

A Little Thing Called Love - Marrying the Duke #0.5
by Cathy Maxwell

What they say: Grandmother, grandmother, who shall it be

Who shall it be who will marry me?
Duke, Earl, a powerful marquess?
When my heart is given to Fyclan Morris…

In New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell's new novella, beautiful Jennifer Tarleton has no lack of noble suitors, but the only man who captures her attention is the one her father will never let her marry: Fyclan Morris. He's a brash adventurer, witty, courageous…and Irish!Even worse, her father blames her for their reversal of fortune…

And it's a fortune—or rather, his grandmother the fortune teller—who foretold that Fyclan would meet "the one,", a love prophesied in the stars. He vows nothing will stand in the way of making Jennifer his bride, but is the price too high? Or is a thing called love worth every challenge?

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: With historical fiction it's often quite hard to visualise the setting or to appreciate a character's back story. In A Little Thing Called Love Cathy Maxwell has created a fun novella to introduce the Morris family before we get to meet them all fully in The Match of the Century (coming soon).

Jennifer Tarleton hates being paraded around by her unscrupulous father. He views her as a prized possession, to be sold off with aims of furthering his social climbing and to pay off his debts. Jennifer wants to marry for love and hates being judge purely on her beauty.

Fyclan Morris believes in destiny. He trusts a prediction from his fortune teller grandmother, and is convinced from their first meeting they are destined to be together. The problems? He's not titled, he's earned his own fortune, he's Irish and Jennifer's father hates him.

Jennifer doesn't want a marriage of convenience, she wants a loving family of her own. She wants to be free to pursue her own interests and to live her life. Fyclan is a very modern man and wants Jennifer for more than just her looks.

I really liked them together and had my fingers crossed for a HEA. I liked both of the characters and felt as though the novella served as a great introduction to the series.

Excerpt:

I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t.
            “Want another rum and coke?”
My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there.
Total bonus points lottery with this guy.
“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?”
I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride.
“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.
“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”
“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”
It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”
“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”
Nick was observant. “Or what?”
One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.”
The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?”
“In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.”
            “Is that so?”
“I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?”
            “Yep.”
“Were there any more rat bastard combinations?”
I laughed. “There were a few more.”
“Kind of mad I missed out on them.”
“There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?”
“Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?”
“Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.”
Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.”
“Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?”
Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?”
            Bonus points explosion!
“None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips.
He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher.
I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance.
Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

Undaunted - Tour & Review

Undaunted - Knights in Black Leather #1
by Ronnie Douglas

What they say: Being fearless has never looked so good . . .

Aubrey Evans needs to get her life back on track after her father is indicted for embezzlement. All she has to do to hightail it out of small-town Tennessee is save up money for college tuition and steer clear of hard-muscled boys on motorcycles. Yet there's no ignoring someone like Zion. A knight in black leather, Zion looks like every bad idea she's been told to avoid, but she can't resist him. Whenever she's in trouble, he's there. Appealing as his rough exterior may be, it's the protective, principled man beneath who tempts her like crazy.

Zion knows Aubrey doesn't intend to stick around. She claims to want only friendship, but he senses there's a naughty girl hiding on the inside—one whose intense desires match his own. For now, he'll be patient and play by her rules. But he knows it's just a matter of time before he weakens her resolve.

As they join forces to figure out who's behind a local crime spree, it's clear that the danger goes deeper than Aubrey guessed. And when she needs someone tall, dark, and undaunted to keep her safe, Zion intends to be there—now and always.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: Aubrey misses her old life. She wants to go home and isn't particularly thrilled at having to move to Tennessee. Whilst staying with her Grandmother, she's introduced to MC world and quickly finds herself drawn to the brooding and controlling biker Zion aka Killer. But getting involved with any biker would disrupt her Uni plans and her dream of leaving Tennessee.

Zion is tough, sexy and kinda scary. Aubrey isn't sure what to make of him and tries to resist his charms and demands. I did like Zion but he didn't have the magnetic pull other bikers have had in the past. I also found myself getting a little annoyed by their constant back and forth - For a biker, Zion is prepared to make some pretty HUGE changes for a girl he hasn't known for long. But he definitely gets marks for dedication and intensity.

Undaunted is cleaner than a lot of other biker books which is good if you're not a fan of such hard core MC culture and extreme alphas. I think a lot of this was down to Aubrey - she moans a lot, but once she stopped trying to change everything, I definitely found her easier to like and started to warm to her.

Now I need more info on her Grandmother, Echo, Noah and even Zion. I'm hoping we'll get to know them better in the next book. I'm a big fan of biker books and have been on something of an MC binge over the last couple of years. Undaunted fits in somewhere between the Reaper's MC books and Katie McGarry's YA biker Thunder Road series.

I had managed to miss that Ronnie Douglas is Melissa Marr until after I read Undaunted, but this it actually helped me to not expect another Wicked Lovely

Excerpt:

When Beau looked her way, she gestured toward a cluster of senior citizens. “Tell the girls to meet me in the kitchen. Might as well have tea if we’re already up.”

Then my grandmother walked toward the bikers, who were leaning on their motorcycles watching everything. They gave her the sort of look that made me think that they were watching approaching royalty. It was a mix between Southern gentlemanliness and the way a fighter acknowledges an equal.”
“If I were the sheriff I’d be sweating like a hussy in the Good Lord’s house right now,” Beau murmured from beside me.
When I looked his way, my confusion must’ve been obvious because Beau added, “Miz Maureen has influential friends. She doesn’t like to call on them, but she’s about fed up waiting on the sheriff. That man couldn’t find his ass with both hands and a map. Those boys there”—he nodded toward the street—“they get things done. Maybe not the way the law likes, but they get results.”
“So they’re not the ones doing this?”

Beau laughed. “Echo would dip a man in honey and stake him out for the bears to find if any one of them boys touched Miz Maureen.” Beau inclined his head toward the bikers who were talking to her. “Your grandmother has the ear of one of the most powerful men in the state. She doesn’t call on Echo for anything, so people forget that she could do so.”
“Oh.”

“Not a bad thing.” Beau patted my hand. “Eddie Echo would steal the stars out from under the angels themselves if Miz Maureen so much as hinted that her yard wasn’t bright enough.”
I followed his gaze. I couldn’t make out many details about the two men standing with my grandmother. They were both, obviously, riding Harleys. I didn’t know enough about bikes to be more specific than that. One of the guys lifted his gaze and looked my way. Dark hair brushed the edge of a black leather jacket. Strong jaw, sharp cheekbones, and a mouth that looked made for sin, he was the sort of contrast in beauty and danger that made me think there had to be a trick of light. No man looked that good. Even as I argued with my own perception, I could tell that he was near my age, fit, and held himself with the kind of restrained energy that made sane girls look away and unhappy girls want to step a bit closer. I told myself that I was sane, that I was going to look away any moment now, that I didn’t want to find an excuse to go check on Grandma Maureen.

I was lying.

“Ask your gran about Echo before you go staring at the likes of those boys,” Beau paused and then added, “I’m going to head inside.”
