Blast from the Past Review: Darker After Midnight by Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed #10

What they say:

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order--a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike--to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.

At the center of the Order's quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase's path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, a beautiful witness who identifies him at the scene of a mission gone terribly wrong, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman--and convinced she is something much more than she seems.

Pulled into a vortex of intrigue and danger she can neither resist nor understand, Tavia is uncertain whom to trust. And while everything sane and logical warns her against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that the handsome, deeply haunted male stirs something primal and ravenous within her. But even as she surrenders to her cravings, nothing can prepare her for the shattering truth of who--and what--she truly is.

As the Order's enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Dragos and his Minions unleashing a hell on Earth like nothing ever seen before, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out and the streets running red with the blood of innocent lives, both Breed and human, together Chase and Tavia must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all--or die trying.

What I say: Darker After Midnight was very different from the previous books in the Midnight Breed series - it had an overwhelming sense of finality and from the opening paragraph it was obvious something game changing was coming.

Chase sacrificed himself to save the Order and is in custody of human police. Tavia Fairchild (a political aide) is sent to identify him as the crazed gunman who tried to assassinate US Politian's at the end of the last book.

Chase has been struggling with bloodlust for years and is on the very cusp of going Rogue. Tavia has lived a sheltered life after a fire killed her parents and left her covered in strange scars as a baby. I loved the twist with Tavia - it literally altered everything we had believed about the Breed!

Chase meets Tavia at the right time; he saves her from a terrible fate and she saves him from himself and from going Rogue. Chase had always lived in his deceased brother's shadow and had been in love with his former sister-in-law Elise for years (she's now happily mated to Tegan). Tavia shows Chase the real meaning of love and sacrifice.

As for Dragos and his evil plan? Well be prepared for one hell of a shock! I think the series was initially supposed to end with Darker After Midnight and this comes across massively with the consequences of Dragos's actions and the ending of the book. I'm pleased Lara Adrian is continuing the series (it starts off 20 years in the future), but I hope she manages to keep everything good about the series intact. Sometimes when authors continue a series after a-sort-of ending the writing suffers.

I could have done with less of the insta-love from some of the characters and this instalment is very baby-centric (they all seem to be having or planning to have vampire babies), but this does allow Adrian to create a whole batch of new warriors for future books!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Now, that's what I call making an entrance."
  • "I don't want you getting used to anyone poking you, unless that someone is me."
  • "Is it a big present?" His eyes gleamed devilishly, lit with amber sparks. "Very big." "With a big red bow on it?"

Novella Mini Review: Unveiled by Trisha Wolfe

Unveiled is a prequel novella for the soon-to-be-released YA fantasy book Fireblood by Trisha Wolfe.

What they say: Part of the Fireblood series coming 2013.

Amongst the wasteland lies the gleaming city of Karm. A Camelot-esque utopia built from the ashes of a dying world.

Seventeen-year-old Fallon is no daughter of Karm.

She's its assassin.

Raised by a secret society of rebels, she's bent on bringing down the king's sham of an existence. But her first mark, one of the king's top knights of the Force, makes her question everything. Even her heart.

I received a copy from the author.

What I say: Thanks to the joys of Goodreads I came across Fireblood by Trisha Wolfe in the future releases section. I love a good fantasy/dystopian/assassin story and decided Fireblood sounded right up my street.

I noticed Trisha had already released a short prequel novella introducing her characters and the citizens of Karm.

Unveiled is a short but good intro into Fallon's world and I loved how the city/kingdom was a funny combination of a futuristic dystopia and fantasy medieval world.

Newly trained teenage assassin, Fallon is given her first mission: to kill Xander. Things don't exactly go to plan and Fallon learns that pretty much everything she believed in is a lie.

I'm really looking forward to the release of Fireblood and to see Fallon and Xander's story continue.

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Well, I could always ask you to show off your skills by attacking that tree."
  • "Yes, the ever-effective 'kiss your enemy to death' tactic," he says, a smile playing at his lips. "I have to admit, it's my preferable way to dies."

Book Blast: American Girl on Saturn by Nikki Godwin

Author: Nikki Godwin
Release date: August 29th, 2013
Genre: Young Adult
Tour: Irresistible Reads Book Tours

Book Description: The summer after graduation is supposed to be that first real taste of freedom - but not for eighteen-year-old Chloe Branson. Just as that breeze of freedom is making its way into her galaxy, her secret-service-agent dad drops a meteor-sized bomb of bad news on her and her sisters. An attempt has been made on the lives of Canadian boyband, Spaceships Around Saturn, during their USA tour, and the guys have to go into hiding ASAP. The only problem? In the midst of the crisis and media frenzy, their dad volunteered to hide the guys...in their house.
Six-year-old Emery is as ecstatic as any self-proclaimed Saturnite would be, but Chloe and her seventeen-year-old sister Aralie watch their summer plans crash and burn like a falling star. The SAS guys aren't happy with the situation, either. Bad boy Jules picks fights with Aralie about everything from his Twitter followers to his laundry, and heart-throb Benji can't escape Emery's fangirlisms for more than three minutes.

But after the super-cute Milo kisses Chloe during a game of hide-and-seek, she finally understands what Emery means when she talks about SAS being "out of this world." If this is what Saturn feels like, Chloe doesn't want to come back to Earth.

Excerpt:

Mom enters the kitchen and shreds away all of my half-courage. “Chloe, sweetheart, I need to talk to you,” she says.
There’s not a single social event I can think of that I may need to cancel today. No parties. No festivals. No lunch dates. Maybe Aralie had something planned, and I have to do damage control.
“This is really hard for me to say, but Ms. Sue called me this morning,” she says.
Who in the world is Ms. Sue?
“She said you stopped by their store last night,” Mom continues. “She wasn’t trying to rat you out, but she was very concerned and wanted me to be aware of what was going on.”
Oh God. The cigarettes! I ease over a few steps and look into the dining room. Jules stares back at me, wide-eyed and stupid. Then he looks away and buries his face. Noah hits Jules’s arm, and Jules motions for them to shut up. He’s seriously going to let me take the fall for this! I turn my back to the dining room because I have to keep my composure through this, and seeing Jules Rossi right now is not helping my composure.
“Chloe, I know things have been rough these last few months,” Mom says. It’s the sympathy tone. “But smoking isn’t the answer. If you need to talk to someone, you can always come to me or Dad or even Godfrey. Or we can pay for therapy sessions.”
“Mom, I’m not smoking,” I insist. “And I don’t need therapy. I’m completely fine. Really.”
She tilts her head and studies me like she did on graduation night, while she cried because her baby was all grown up. She has those same worried eyes now that she had when she talked about setting her baby bird out to fly on her own. Please, Mom. Don’t call me a baby bird while 3/5 of SAS is listening.
“Sweetheart,” she says. “I just know you went through a lot with that break up, and seeing Deacon the other day couldn’t have made things any easier, especially when he acted like he did. I know you had big plans this summer, and I wish things could’ve gone as planned.”
“I’m okay, Mom,” I say through my teeth.
“Then why were you buying cigarettes, Chloe? Ms. Sue wouldn’t just make that up,” she says.
Her voice pleads with me, like she’s truly heartbroken and worried. She doesn’t even seem mad about it. I don’t know who this Ms. Sue woman is or where she was hiding at that service station, but damn her all the way across the universe for running her big freaking mouth.
“They were for me.” The voice is directly behind me.
But it’s not Jules.

Review: The Keeper and the Rune Stone by Paige W. Pendleton

The Black Ledge Series #1

What the say: An unholy ritual, a ticking clock. Four children discover there are things that go bump in the night ...

Centuries ago a group of Elves committed an unholy ritual. But the ritual was a spectacular failure. It transformed the Elves into the Noctivagi - the beings we know as vampires.

Striving to maintain a fragile peace, the ancient Elves and Dwarves negotiated an Accord, which they've renewed every year on the Summer Solstice. The ceremony depends on the magical Rune Stone, but it's missing. If it is not found—and quickly—the consequences could be dire, and not just for Elves and Dwarves.

Four children, Rob, Jack, Eleanor, and Flora, stumble into a world of magic and mayhem when they move into Black Ledge, the old estate on the Maine coast, and discover they aren’t the only ones who live there.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: In The Keeper and the Rune Stone, Paige W. Pendleton has created a sweet and adventure filled story which kids everywhere will enjoy.

The story reminded me of a cross between Five Children and It, The Spiderwick Chronicles and The Wishing Chair but more focused on vampire-elfish creatures and magic. The story is about the Driscoll children's move into a fancy new house called Black Ledge. At Black Ledge and the Realm they meet mysterious creatures and get their own sense of magic. Told from the POV of Eleanor, the kids meet Camedon the Keeper (most defo not fae) and Ralph the Goblin, amongst others.

I personally felt a huge sense of nostalgia whilst reading Pendleton's story, because it reminded me of a childhood spent looking for magical creatures, hidden lands and fighting the bad guys and always winning!

The Keeper and the Rune Stone is the first in the series (check back soon for my review of book #2) and it has a definite hook which keeps readers entertained. It's probably best suited to (what us Brits call) Junior School or the younger high school aged kids, and I think my younger cousins will love the series.

Pendleton has created a good, clean, fun children's story featuring all things fantastical and includes a good old moral lesson; that of good v's evil.

3.5 - 4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Crabmatic. Not much of a fighter - he's too busy studying everything around him. Get it? Pragmatic?"
  • "Human Beings are not the only intelligent life in the world." He smiled. "They just think they are."

Waiting On Wednesday: Tempt The Stars by Karen Chance

Waiting on Wednesday is my weekly post where I obsess over the shiny new books  I cannot wait to read!

This week I'm waiting on... Tempt The Stars (Cassie Palmer #6)
by Karen Chance

What they say: Being a goddess is a lot less fun than you might think. Especially when you’re only a half goddess, and you only found out about it recently, and you still don’t know what you’re doing half the time. And when you’ve just used your not-so-reliable powers to burglarize the booby-trapped office of a vampire mob boss.

Yeah, that part sucks.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Cassandra Palmer, aka the Pythia, the freshly minted chief seer of the supernatural world. After all, Cassie still has to save a friend from a fate worse than death, deal with an increasingly possessive master vampire, and prevent a party of her own acolytes from unleashing a storm of fury upon the world. Totally just your average day at the office, right?

Expected Publication: 1st Oct 2013 by Signet Select

Why I'm waiting on Tempt The Stars:
  1. The Cassie Palmer series is great!
  2. I love Karen Chance's writing style.
  3. There are several badass and swoonworthy men vying for Cassie's affection (sort of).
  4. The supernatural lore invited by Karen is very different and creative!
  5. Pritkin or Mircea?

Blast from the Past Review: Deeper Than Midnight by Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed #9

What they say: DELIVERED FROM THE DARKNESS, A WOMAN FINDS HERSELF PLUNGED INTO A PASSION THAT IS DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT.

At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her world changed in an instant when she was stolen away and held prisoner by the malevolent vampire Dragos. After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well—the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.

Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos’s most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he’s hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he’ll go to end Dragos’s reign of evil—even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne’s tender heart.

What I say: A lot happens in Deeper Than Midnight, but at it's heart it a really sweet love story!

Aww I loved Hunter, he's right up there amongst my fav Order members! Having spent his life as an assassin for Dragos, he's not really had many positive experiences and has been trained to turn off all emotions. Dragos used the UV collars to manipulate his assassins and stopped them from having sex, falling in love or from having any free will.
It was really sweet watching him realise what his er... responses to Corrine actually meant. Certain scenes had me laughing at how niave he was; where all the other warriors were super sexed former man-whores Hunter didn't even recognise desire. Hunter knew only violence until Mira's vision saved him and led him to Corrine.
Corrine also suffered at Dragos's hands, being abducted and used to breed another assassin with the Ancient. After being saved by the Order, Corrine is brought into more secrets and lies. She had expected Brock to be there but he's now mated to Jenna, but she finds a better match in Hunter.
Hunter and Corrine work together to find her missing son Nathan and to discover more about Dragos and his evil empire.
On another note... The ending was a real shocker, I genuinely didn't see that one coming and couldn't believe Chase. Lara Adrian leaves the series on a real cliffhanger which is set to change EVERYTHING!
4.5 Stars in my Sky!
My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • She knew how terrible she must look to him, but Hunter was gazing at her with open admiration, as though she were the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
  • Hard as it was to maintain the illusion his talent generated, he didn't think he'd tire very quickly of looking at the self-assured, all-business woman in the oh-baby dress.
  • Running toward the mansion with a dozen or more cops hot on their heels. Dragos had sent them here.

Tour + Review: Blind Allegiance by Violetta Rand

Historical Romance
Date Published: 6/25/2013

It’s a risk of a lifetime loving a man you’re supposed to hate…

Betrayed by a brother she hardly trusted before the bloodthirsty Viking, Jarl Randvior Sigurdsson, attacks her home, Noelle Sinclair is conveniently bartered as a means to save her cowardly sibling’s skin. Forced to leave her homeland and accompany the petulant Viking to the untamed wilderness of central Norway, Noelle is ever-aware of the burgeoning dangers around her—including her weakening resolve to resist Randvior.

Should Noelle surrender to his resplendent charms and seduction, or fight with every ounce of strength she possesses to get home?

Author Spotlight: Violetta Rand holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Policy and a master's degree in Environmental Management. Serving as an environmental scientist in the state of Alaska for over seven years, she enjoys the privilege of traveling to remote places few people have the opportunity to see.

Violetta has been "in love" with writing since childhood. Struck with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age, at five, she wrote short stories illustrated by her best friend and sold them in her neighborhood.

The only thing she loves more than writing is her wonderful relationship with her husband, Jeff. She enjoys outdoor activities, reading whatever she can get her hands on, music, and losing herself in the ancient worlds she enjoys bringing to life in the pages of her stories.

Excerpt:
Cringing from his brutal words, Noelle finally burst. Through the blur of tears, she saw a warrior of tremendous proportion storm across the hall. He seized Brian’s arm and pried his fingers loose from her hair. She heard a loud snap as he curled Brian’s arm behind his back. Her brother stumbled and hollered, then dropped to his knees.
“Say it,” the colossal warrior demanded, visibly applying more pressure to his hand.
Brain tried to wrestle him down, but the stranger was larger and stronger—controlled him with little effort.
Although she detested her brother, her first instinct was to protect her own flesh and blood. Yet, it seemed a fitting punishment. Let Brian suffer the same mortification she felt whenever he embarrassed her, which happened too often.
Brain quit struggling. “Mercy,” he begged.
The Viking released him, and Brian staggered to his feet as gracelessly as a drunk.
“Is this how you treat your own kinswoman?” her rescuer asked.
“She’s faithless—no blood of mine. We’ve made our bargain Norseman, take her.”

What I say (review): I'm on a real historical fiction/Romance kick as I recently reviewed Norse Jewell another Viking romance, but thankfully Violetta Rand's Blind Allegiance has far less confusing names! Blind Allegiance begins (as all good Viking stories should) with a raid. Noelle's cowardly brother, Brian, gives her to the invading Viking chief to save himself. The Viking chief, Randvior is instantly taken with Noelle's beauty and spirit and is determined to win her over. Blind Allegiance is about their complicated love story and how Noelle starts to fall for her capturer.

Randvior is not your average invader and is kind to Noelle. He chooses to seduce rather than force her and is extremely protective and possessive of his English beauty. Luckily for 18 year old Noelle, he is only 28 and is extremely handsome (I kept thinking of Eric from True Blood when he had long hair).

Violetta Rand has obviously done her research on Vikings and I really enjoyed all of the Odin and Nordic God stuff (It made me want to watch Thor).

Randvior's mother supplies a lot of the intrigue; she is extremely anti-Saxon's and is determined to dispose of Noelle. I was shocked by the lengths she was willing to go to have things her own way.

I enjoyed Blind Allegiance and although it was set in a fictionalised past it had some really modern parts and I really liked the Viking love story section.

For the romance and intrigue: 3.5 - 4 Stars in my Sky!

Blast from the Past Review: Taken by Midnight by Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed #8

What they say: AT THE CROSSROADS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, A WOMAN TASTES A PLEASURE NO MORTAL IS MEANT TO SURVIVE.

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand—and control—a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock’s care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order’s mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself—until a secret from Brock’s past and Jenna’s own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

What I say: Taken by Midnight picks up right where Shades of Midnight left off. Jenna is recovering from whatever the Ancient did to her and is currently speaking a lost Ancient Breed language. The Order take Jenna back to Boston with them to learn more about her condition and how it could influence the Breed.

Brock is extremely protective of Jenna (if you've forgotten she's Alex's human best friend and not a Breedmate), which I found equally sweet and annoying. It was actually really sad when Lara Adrian revealed more about Brock's past and explained his protectiveness - nothing like survivors guilt or the high expectations people place on themselves to create notions of failure.

Jenna isn't a Breedmate and so she cannot share a blood bond with Brock and also faces the unsettling idea that she'll grow old whilst he won't - Or will she? Adrian comes up with an awesome twist in terms of Jenna's fate.

What I also really enjoyed about Taken By Midnight was the positive representation Adrian provides of interracial relationships. Brock informs Jenna that skin colour doesn't matter to the Breed in the way it does to humans (at least how it did in the past), BUT he mentions past problems he faced by being a black male seen socialising with a white woman (Breedmate Corinne) in the 1920s.

A great instalment in the Midnight Breed series, with an extremely important ending!

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • He didn't need to be thinking about the woman, naked or otherwise. Except now that he'd gone there, he could think of damned little else.
  • "You know, for an old man, you have amazing stamina."
  • "I could give a damn, if you're human, cyborg, alien, or some mixed-up combination of all three."
