Too Cute! All the Fun of the Fair

All the Fun of the Fair - Bad Nana #2
by Sophy Henn

What they say: The second book in the wickedly funny series for ages six and up from the creator of Where Bear?Pass It On and the Pom Pom series, with colour illustrations throughout.
(This ebook is optimised for Kindle tablets and the Kindle App. It is not suitable for e-Ink kindle devices, such as the PaperWhite. We recommend you download a sample to your device before purchase if in doubt.)
Hi! I’m Jeanie – 7 ¾ years old, and a BIG fan of badges.
BAD NANA is one of my three grandmas (yes, three). Of course, “Bad Nana” isn’t actually her actual name – but it’s what everyone has been calling her for MILLIONS of years. If I had MY way, I would call her “Fun Nana”, because she is actually brilliant. Yes, she’s a bit NAUGHTY sometimes, but in an EXCELLENT way.
My Dad says she really should know better, but I think she’s so bad, she’s GOOD!

Whatcha Reading Wednesday - Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat

This book has been out for YEARS but I came across a copy of this in the library and thought I'd start on the 'Emmy' series.

This week I'm reading:

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat
by Lynne Jonell

What they say: Emmy was a good girl. At least she tried very hard to be good. She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days.

She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .

Hilarious, inventive, and irresistably rodent-friendly, Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is a fantastic first novel from acclaimed picture book author Lynne Jonell.

Storm and Fury - The Harbinger #1
by Jennifer L. Armentrout

What they say: Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.

When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

This is the first book in the Dark Elements series spin-off, so you'll see some familiar faces (*cough* ROTH). But don't worry, you don't have to have read the Dark Elements to enjoy.

Defy the Fates - Constellation #3
by Claudia Gray

What they say: Hunted and desperate.

Abel only has one mission left that matters: save the life of Noemi Vidal. To do that, he not only has to escape the Genesis authorities, he also must face the one person in the galaxy who still has the means to destroy him. Burton Mansfield's consciousness lives on, desperate for a home, and Abel's own body is his last bargaining chip.

Alone in the universe.

Brought back from the brink of death, Noemi Vidal finds Abel has not only saved her life, but he's made her into something else, something more. Not quite mech, yet not quite human any longer, Noemi must find her place in a universe where she is utterly unique, all while trying to create a world where anyone--even a mech--can be free.

The final battle between Earth and the colony planets is here, and there's no lengths to which Earth won't go to preserve its domination over all humanity. But together, the universe's most advanced mech and its first human-mech hybrid might have the power to change the galaxy for good.

to the planet for her first secret mission alone. Raised by her father on an
orbiting trade ship, he trained her for this - and to live by two rules: Don’t

patrol the skies on Karda, majestic hawk-headed flying horses.

On this planet where the only weapons allowed are arrows and swords, Marta
discovers a high-tech weapon she knows could only come from her ship. Someone
is smuggling them to use in the bitter power struggle between two noble
brothers. She knows she must stop this threat, and she reluctantly joins forces
with the handsome but arrogant Altan. As their connection grows, Marta

Excerpt

The wagon slowed, and Bren poked an elbow into her ribs. Marta

caught herself on the side of the seat before she tumbled off and embarrassed herself.
“Look there,” he said, pointing up through a break in the clouds. “Karda.” Joy swelled in her chest, and she forgot to breathe. Two enormous flying figures were high in the sky, wings outstretched as they circled up

a thermal. Sun glinted from bronze and gold wingtips. Their forelegs

were tucked under, hind ones stretched behind. Manes and

tails streamed.

“Oh, by the Lady Adalta,” Bren breathed. “Did you ever see anythin' more beautiful?”

She watched the creatures rise ever higher into the sky, spread their wings wide in a glide, and disappear into the clouds. And something inside her shifted. Her whole body prickled with the need to see them again. To get close to them. She grabbed the side of the wagon to anchor herself. The few images the spy bugs had sent couldn't compare. I can't believe I might fly on one of those beautiful beings. They are magical. What if I’m rejected for the training program? What if my cover story has too many holes?

Author Spotlight:

Sherrill Nilson used to raise horses. Now she writes about flying horses--with hawk
heads and wicked talons. Author of the Adalta Series, she's been a cattle rancher, horse breeder, environmentalist, mother of three, traveler to exotic places-even a tarot card

reader. She's lived in Santa Fe and Ruidoso, NM, San Francisco, and Austin
after leaving the hills of Eastern Oklahoma and her ranch.

She has a Ph.D. in East-West Psychology, and those studies opened her to the world
of ancient myth and story. The rigor of writing so many papers and her
dissertation suited her. She loves science fiction and fantasy and is a
prolific reader.

She lives, writes, and reads SciFi/fantasy in Tulsa, Oklahoma--back where she
started as the oldest of seven kids (don't ask to drive), three of whom are
writers who love telling each other how they should write.
"Sometimes," she says, "They're mean to me and use too much red ink."

She doesn't have a dog, a cat, or even a bird, but she does have an old Volvo
convertible and loves to drive around with the wind blowing her hair. It's how
she gets her vitamin D.

New release - This Was Our Pact

This Was Our Pact
by Ryan Andrews

What they say: Ryan Andrews's This Was Our Pact is an astonishing, magical-realist adventure story for middle-grade readers.

It's the night of the annual Autumn Equinox Festival, when the town gathers to float paper lanterns down the river. Legend has it that after drifting out of sight, they'll soar off to the Milky Way and turn into brilliant stars, but could that actually be true? This year, Ben and his classmates are determined to find out where those lanterns really go, and to ensure success in their mission, they've made a pact with two simple rules: No one turns for home. No one looks back.

The plan is to follow the river on their bikes for as long as it takes to learn the truth, but it isn't long before the pact is broken by all except for Ben and (much to Ben's disappointment) Nathaniel, the one kid who just doesn't seem to fit in.

Together, Nathaniel and Ben will travel farther than anyone has ever gone, down a winding road full of magic, wonder, and unexpected friendship*.

Adult Fiction
Date Published: June 14th 2019
Publisher: Beautiful Arch

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Tales from The Beach House is a satiric work of fiction that sharply captures the
“Man-Bites-Dog” world of contemporary South Florida. The Beach House, a
crumbling old motel, is home to a collection of eccentric residents. Amongst
their ranks; a tennis pro at the end of his game, a mortuary scientist whose
love life has flat-lined, a paparazzo photographer searching for scoops, a
bawdy duo fronting an improbable Ponzi enterprise, a beauty from “The Islands”
with a dark secret, a fried-out TV weather man who claims to channel God, a
middle school principal with a soft spot for Crack, a Rod Stewart cover artist
searching for redemption, and a waitress serving a side order of erotic
fiction. Each member of this cohort is in search of something – fast money, an
easy hustle, fleeting romance, enduring love, fame, power, dignity, happiness…
a place they can call home. As well as facing their own tender, tragic, and
often hilarious personal circumstances, this eclectic gang is compelled by
necessity to band together when a sinister developer threatens the very
existence of The Beach House.

Author Spotlight:

James Aylott was previously a Hollywood paparazzo photographer and staffer at an

American supermarket tabloid. This is the author’s first work of fiction,
although he was often creative in his career of entertainment newsgathering and
hated letting the truth interfere with a good story. A prior resident of Delray
Beach, Florida he is currently embedded in St. Louis, Missouri researching his
follow up novel: Tales of Whiskey Tango from Misery Towers.
