Tall, Dark, and Deadly 3 Book Box Set - Series Review

Tall, Dark, and Deadly (Books #0.5, #1 & #2)
by Lisa Renee Jones

What they say:

The Walker Brothers...

Tall, dark, and deadly, these three brothers run Walker security. Each brother is unique in his methods and skills, but all share key similarities. They are passionate about those they love, relentless when fighting for a cause they believe in, and all believe that no case is too hard, no danger too dark. Dedication is what they deliver, results are their reward.

Royce Walker, a former FBI Agent, who's opened a private security firm with his brothers, has always had the hots for the prim, proper Assistant District Attorney, but considered her hand's off because of a family connection. However, when danger threatens Lauren, he isn't willing to stand by and watch her get hurt. Now the passion for survival is only rivaled by the passion burning between them. And that passion, might just be the death of them both.

Being a divorce attorney for the rich and famous isn't all it's cracked up to be. Julie Harrison has learned that love doesn't last, and she's sworn never to make the same mistakes as her mother, or her clients. She uses the games men play to keep them at a distance. The only man who managed to break down her walls was Luke Walker, a Navy SEAL who loved her and left her, and changed her forever.

When Luke arrives back in New York, running Walker Security with his brothers and having left his Navy SEAL days behind, he sets his sights on Julie, the woman he's always wanted and couldn't have. Except, she runs from him every time he gets close.

But now, one of Julie's clients, a powerful judge, gets involved with a dangerous cartel, and his soon-to-be-ex wife ends up dead. Julie's next on the list, and she finds herself on the run from those who believe she knows too much, and counting on Luke to keep her alive. In the deepest, darkest moments of the night, passion will bring them together while danger threatens to tear them apart. Can Julie and Luke trust each other and find their happy ending before they find ... the end?

75,000 words About Secrets Exposed: Her enemy is her passion, her passion is her enemy...
Lindsey Paxton was once the number one defense attorney in New York. She fought for those who were innocent, but charged. Her instincts were her lifeline, never failing her, as they guided her in her choices of who to defend. Or so she thought. Until she won a case she would forever wish to have lost. Her client, an accused rapist, kills and rapes a woman only a day after being set free. Destroyed by her role in the woman's death, Lindsey blames her father's controlling ways for what she has become, and runs from her career and life. Years later - the past becomes the present, and one man, her enemy, the only one she can turn to.

What I say: I read the books together as an anthology & am going to review them in the order they appeared here, starting with book #1 Hot Secrets.

Hot Secrets introduces Lauren Reynolds, who has a pushy Senator father and a demanding job with the DA. After Lauren receives some pretty serious threats, her father "hires" Royce Walker as her bodyguard and all round protector. Royce isn't allowed to tell Lauren of the danger or his real role.

Royce and his two brothers Blake and Luke, are alpha males to the extreme. Royce is uber protective of Lauren, and although I wasn't always convinced about Royce's methods, I liked him.

The story focuses on Lauren's struggle to do her job, survive the danger and not give into to Royce's many charms. I did guess the twist with this one but it was still enjoyable to watch it all unfold.
4 Stars!

The next book is Dangerous Secrets (book #2) which shifts to Julie (Lauren's bestie from book #1) and Luke Walker. Julie and Luke have a past and er...spent some time together years ago. It isn't until Julie is inadvertently dragged into the divorce battle between a judge and his wife that she needs Luke's help.

As with the first book the narrative follows a mystery/crime hunt which Julie is thrown into. Luke is as possessive, if not more so than Royce and goes all out to convince a cynical Julie (she is a divorce lawyer) that they can be a couple.

I had just finished J.Lynn's Tempting the Bodyguard when I read this and so the stories did slightly merge together at times. I wasn't as invested in Julie and Luke's story as I was with Lauren and Royce, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
3.5 Stars!

The last book Secrets Exposed is actually a kind of spin-off, prequel novella set in the same world, but featuring different characters. This time we meet former lawyer and current FBI agent Lindsey Paxton. Lindsey has returned to New York to look after her ill father and rather begrudgingly run his legal firm. She seeks out her dad's former partner, Mark, to take over the business but ends up working with him to solve a murder and find answers.

I did find Lindsey a little annoying because she kept running off and often seemed to repeat the same mistakes. The twist was clever and Lisa Renee Jones kept me guessing for a while.

I enjoyed the box set and would like to read Blake's story. I'd like to have seen the characters developed a but more though, but perhaps that will come in the next instalment. Royce and Lauren were my favourite couple by far because they had more depth and their mystery had greater suspense, but the other stories were enjoyable too.
3 Stars!

Overall 3.5 Stars in my Sky!
