Devil's Game Review

Devil's Game (Reaper's MC #3)
by Joanna Wylde

What they say: Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger—a man who isn't afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn't afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One.

Or so she thinks.

What I say: I've been impatiently waiting for Devil's Game from the second I finished Reaper's Legacy; where we were given a small insight into Em's and Liam/Hunter's life, and I was desperate to read the full story. By Joanna Wylde's own admission Devil's Game reads a little differently than the first two. I think it's party due to the set up of the book and partly to do with Em's age. Devil's Game starts off before certain events in book #2 and then revisits others, before moving on to fully new ground. This works well because Em & Hunter 'meet' online and so we get to see their relationship develop.

The key aspect is of course the star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet style story, which Em and Hunter are in. Hunter's from the bad MC i.e. the Devil's Jacks and Em is the daughter of the DJ's rivals president, Picnic, of our beloved Reapers. Before reading the story I couldn't work out how Wylde was going to get around this because either of them being with the other, it's a pretty big betrayal against their club. And as we know, bikers don't do betrayal (well you don't survive it).

I was really pleased to see Em take charge and stand up to the men in her life. She knows her place within the MC culture, but isn't prepared to be ordered around any more. She's fierce when it comes to Picnic, Painter, Hunter and even Deke. I'm still not sure how I feel about the women involved in biker culture. I personally would never be able to live in a society where my opinion was seen as lesser than somebody else just because I'm a woman. But anyway I still love the stories and the men and women involved!

Liam/Hunter is an all out alpha male  He's strong, fierce  possessive and has one hell of a potty mouth. But he's also kinda sweet with Em, if only he'd start being truthful with her. I'm not a fan of half-truths/lies by omission but I get the way it is in their world. Hunter is prepared to fight for Em and won't let fate get it the way. I loved his determination and dedication. It made certain other bikers seem weaker (naming no names of course).

I'm not going to bang on about the plot because I hate spoilers. I will say it was nice to see some of our favourite characters told from a different angle/perspective (i.e. seeing the Reaper's as the bad guys). I also liked the brief intro we got into the DJ's and to Kit (Em's sister).

The ending was fab and nicely sets the scene for Picnic's story in Reaper's Stand (coming later this year). How Em isn't traumatised by all the women her Dad brings I don't know *shudders*. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Painter!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • I didn't need to control her...I just wanted to sit back and watch her, try to figure out what made her tick and hold on for the ride.
  • "You deserve a man who’ll fight for you, baby girl. You remember that, all right?"
  • "I can’t imagine anything more fun that spending a holiday in the home of the man who wants me dead. Like our own f**kin’ Hallmark movie, but with live ammo."
  • "What the hell is that?" I asked. "I mean, what are you supposed to be dressed like?" "I’m a sexy carrot." I looked at Dad and shook my head slowly. He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
