Reaper's Property Review

Reaper's Property by Joanna Wylde - Reaper's MC #1

What they say: Marie doesn’t need a complication like Horse. The massive, tattooed, badass biker who shows up at her brother’s house one afternoon doesn’t agree. He wants Marie on his bike and in his bed. Now.

But Marie just left her abusive jerk of an ex-husband and she’s not looking for a new man. Especially one like Horse—she doesn’t know his real name or where he lives, she’s ninety percent certain he’s a criminal and that the “business” he talks with her brother isn’t website design. She needs him out of her life, which would be a snap if he’d just stop giving her mind-blowing orgasms.

Horse is part of the Reapers Motorcycle Club, and when he wants something, he takes it. What he wants is Marie, but she’s not interested in becoming “property of”.

Then her brother steals from the club. Marie can save him by giving Horse what he wants—at home, in public, on his bike… If she’s a very, very good girl, she’ll get lots more of those orgasms only he can offer, and he’ll let her brother live.
Maybe.

What I say: I've read a few biker stories before but have never really gotten into them until now (gotta love Sons of Anarchy). Reaper's Property is the first book in Joanna Wylde's Reaper's Motorcycle Club series and we're introduced the to often brutal and dramatic world of the biker. When the story begins civilian Marie finds herself forced to be biker hottie Horse's 'house mouse' to save her brother.

I don't really know much about the biker lifestyle (only what I've seen on TV or read in books) so it took a while to get my head round the outlaw lifestyle, similarly Marie has problems accepting MC rule's and their lifestyle. The men are definitely in charge and pretty much do as they like. This being said bikers live by their own code or rule's and although they call their wives/women 'Old Ladies' and 'property' which is a revered and high honour. Before I read the book being labelled as 'property' seemed really controlling and 'Old Lady' sounded insulting (I had visions of knitting and Nora Batty), but as I became immersed in the story I realised although these terms and rules may be different to what I'm used to they're neither insulting nor rude.

Horse 'hung like-a' can and does have any girl he wants, is very single minded when he meets Marie and is determined to have her. Marie doesn't understand biker culture and as hot as he is, she doesn't want to be an Old Lady. Scarred from her last relationship, she doesn't trust guys to remain faithful and she's unsure about the violent MC lifestyle.

Marie did get on my nerves at times because she was somewhat indecisive, but then Horse doesn't really explain things to her and she's never sure what he's offering and of his motives. The situation with the Reaper's and her brother doesn't help ease her into the biker world and I understood her reservations. Horse is possessive, controlling and an all-round-alpha; this must be very daunting for naive Marie.

There is a lot of sex and bad language in Reaper's Property and it is most definitely an adult book. The violence may be a bit extreme for some readers but I saw it as part of the culture. In amongst all the sex, violence and drama there are some really sweet moments and some really funny ones.

Could I pull off being an Old Lady? Well I do like leather but I don't think I could ever accept my guy disappearing or the club whores always being around, so I'll stick to reading about bikers for now!

My fav  non-spoilery quotes:
  • "So aren't you gonna ask?" I studied him, narrowing my eyes. I had a bad feeling about this. But the words came out of my mouth, completely beyond my control. "So why are you called Horse?" "Cause I'm hung like one," he replied, smirking.
  • Apparently nice Horse would be joining me for dinner instead of his evil twin.
  • Just ’cause I’m the picture of manly perfection doesn’t mean I don’t have a brain.
  • "I’ve never ridden a bike before." Horse leaned over and gave me a quick kiss on the mouth. "Lookin’ forward to being your first, babe."
