The Collector by Victoria Scott Review

Something old (ish)...

The Collector Dante Walker #1

What they say: He makes good girls...bad.

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence have made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple: weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal-opportunity collector and doesn't want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within ten days.

Dante doesn't know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect, he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector…and uncover emotions deeply buried.

What I say: I honestly cannot believe it's taken me this long to read The Collector - I blame a ridiculously long TBR list! By the time I read The Collector it had already built up a huge amount of hype which I was interested to see if it would live up to.

The story is told from Dante's POV as he struggles to collect teenage girl Charlie's soul. The story is hysterical and Dante's POV really worked; his cynical, snarky and cocky attitude was fun to read. I was expecting him to be even snarkier (is that a word?). What I really enjoyed was how Dante isn't your average watered down bad boy, he's actually a real arse and kinda owns it! He's not dwelling on his bad actions because he's enjoying himself too much. It takes a real shift to alter his perception and so it makes sense that Charlie would be the antithesis of him.

I love Charlie in all her bumbling glory. She may not be pretty, she may not have much but she's happy and her goodness shines through. I was expecting her to be dull, but she's far to wacky to ever be dull. It was an interesting contrast to watch her metamorphosis alongside Dante's.

I'm still upset about one event, I wasn't sure it needed to happen. It made me both sad kinda pissed off but I guess there may be more of an explanation in the next book. I enjoyed Dante's story although would have liked a bit more grit.

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • I glance in the mirror. Surprise, surprise—I look finger-lickin’ delicious.
  • Mr. Awkward rolls up between us, lights a cigarette, makes himself comfortable. It’s the same bastard who shows up after you’ve bumped uglies with a stranger.
  • "Dante. Oh, Dante. Seal me! Seal me so hard!" He grabs my hips and pumps his toward mine. "Oh, Dante! You're so hot when you seal souls!" I shove my idiot-of-a-best-friend off me and laugh.
  • How can someone be cruel to this chick? It’s like picking a fight with a chipmunk.
