Tears of Tess Review

Monsters in the Dark #1 by Pepper Winters

This book is dark so read he warning before reading the book and review!

What they say: A New Adult Dark Contemporary Romance, not suitable for people sensitive to grief, slavery, and nonconsensual sex. A story about finding love in the strangest of places, a will of iron that grows from necessity, and forgiveness that may not be enough.

“My life was complete. Happy, content, everything neat and perfect. Then it all changed. I was sold.”

Tess Snow has everything she ever wanted: one more semester before a career in property development, a loving boyfriend, and a future dazzling bright with possibility.

For their two year anniversary, Brax surprises Tess with a romantic trip to Mexico. Sandy beaches, delicious cocktails, and soul-connecting sex set the mood for a wonderful holiday. With a full heart, and looking forward to a passion filled week, Tess is on top of the world.

But lusty paradise is shattered. Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror. Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future, Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter. But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold.

Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever?

What I say: I REALLY don't know what to say about this one! I've read a few dark romances in the past and they always leave me confused about whether or not I should be disgusted and tbh Tears of Tess did the same.

Tess is kidnapped whilst on holiday with her very 'vanilla' and perfect-on-paper boyfriend Brax. She's sold into sexual slavery and trafficked into France where she finds herself at the mercy of Q Mercer i.e. her new Master!

The books doesn't take exactly the same turn as I was expecting and thankfully Tess doesn't end up on following Livie from Seduced in the Dark. There are a lot of smutty scenes and a couple in particular that readers who are against any sort of violence and er kink definitely won't like but it isn't a BDSM book as such, it's a dark and twisted love story.

Q is an ass and a monster, he's also generous and caring - but mostly he's deeply troubled. I'll leave it to you to discover why. He's also not quite the monster he thinks he is and nor is evil.

Tess isn't exactly all sweetness and like. At first I only saw her as a victim but then I saw her empowerment and although I didn't agree with many of her decisions I felt empathy for her plight and Q's dark magnetic charm.

I'm not sure if I like these types of books or not, but they most definitely stay with you.
