Play by Kylie Scott Review

Stage Dive #2
by Kylie Scott

What they say: Kylie Scott returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to international bestseller Lick. Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast—at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. Mal doesn’t plan on this temporary fix becoming permanent, but he didn’t count on finding the one right girl. Anne Rollins never thought she’d ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn’t end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

What I say: I liked book #1 Lick but I loved PlayPlay is the second book in Kylie Scott's Stage Dive rocker series. This time the rocker we focus on is Mal (Malcolm Erickson) as he convinces Anne to be his pretend girlfriend.

I think the reason I enjoyed Play so much was because (hotness and sexy scenes aside even though these were great) the book was really funny!! I remember liking Mal's one-liners in Lick (and his affirmed man-whore status) but Kylies Scott has upped the ante in Play because Mal is hilarious!

Mal's sexy, hot and smutty-as-hell but he comes out with some ridiculous lines. I was torn between cringing and swooning, but mainly laughing my butt off! Don't get me wrong, a lot of Mal's comedy and easy going persona is a front to hide his suffering. There are some really poignant and sad moments throughout the story and Mal doesn't have it easy. I may have needed the tissues at certain points *sniffs*!

I liked Anne and was glad she learnt to stand up for herself. I was worried she'd be a pushover and make things too easy for Mal (he was her teen icon after all), but thankfully she gave him a run for his money, yet managed to be a total comfort to him. Anne really goes out of her way to support Mal, even when I wasn't entirely sure he deserved it.

I was really pleased to see Ev, David, Lauren, Nate and Jimmy back. I still haven't been won over by Ben, but I'm sure Kylie will change my mind by the time we get his book (lead singer Jimmy is up next)!

I really enjoyed Play and was completely won over by Mal's smutty mouth. The good thing about Mal is he's also really sweet, loyal and against-it-all, kinda romantic (in a often smutty way). In book boyfriend terms, Mal's right up there behind Jake Wethers!

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • “Whatever you’re imagining, it’s bigger.” “I’m not imagining anything.”  “I’m serious, it’s basically a monster. I cannot control it.” “Malcolm...” “You’re pretty much going to need a whip and a chair to tame it, Anne.” “Stop it.”
  • “C’mon, Anne. We must defend our fake sex life.”
  • “We’ve broken my bed,” I said, stating the obvious. “In battle, sacrifices must be made, pumpkin.”
  • “Life’s a song, Anne. Let’s play.”
