A Touch of Midnight Review

Midnight Breed #0.5 (prequel novella)
by Lara Adrian

What they say: Savannah Dupree is halfway across the country from her Louisiana bayou hometown, a freshman studying at Boston University on a full scholarship. But academic excellence is only one of Savannah’s gifts. She possesses something even more remarkable than her quick mind and insatiable curiosity for learning. With a simple touch, Savannah can see an object’s past—a skill that puts her life in danger, when her studies bring her into contact with a centuries-old English sword and the secret hidden within the blade’s history: the vicious murders of twin boys by a group of fanged creatures borne of the worst kind of nightmare.

In all his three hundred years of living as one of the Breed, vampire warrior Gideon never dreamed he’d see the blade again that spilled his young brothers’ lives ages ago on that blood-soaked night in London. Ever since the boys’ deaths, Gideon’s been on a personal quest to rid the world of Rogue vampires, but now he can’t help wondering if the brutal slayings of his only kin was something more sinister—an act perpetrated by an unknown enemy. An enemy who is apparently living in hiding somewhere in Boston. There’s one certain way to prove Gideon’s suspicion, but it will mean using innocent, gifted Savannah to help uncover the full truth—a truth that will shatter everything she knows about herself and the world around her. And with danger closing in from all sides, the passion that ignites between Gideon and Savannah will tempt them to risk their hearts and lives for a love that might just last an eternity…

What I say: *If you haven't read the previous Midnight Breed books then be warned this review contains a few tiny spoilers from the series and references which may not make much sense.*

I'm a big fan of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series and I'm glad I FINALLY made the time to read Gideon and Savannah's novella. When the series begins Gideon and Savannah have been together for a long time so it was nice to see how they meet.

It's a novella so A Touch of Midnight is short. Personally I'd have liked a complete book, but I'm greedy when it comes to this series. The Gideon we get here is more alpha than we're used to seeing in the series. Don't get me wrong, he's still a geeky genius but we get to see a more badass Breed version of Gideon.

I really liked Savannah and getting her POV was really insightful because we see her strength and determination away from the Breed. She matches Gideon with intelligence and loyalty. I loved the stuff with Savannah's sister, and it was strange seeing certain characters who have, er, taken a different path (yes, Eva I mean you) back in the fold.

I'm not generally a fan of insta-love and the only time I seem to find it acceptable is in the Black Dagger Brotherhood or Midnight Breed books because it seems more fitting with vampires. The ending and Gideon's choice slightly annoyed me, but it explains his position within the Order in the other books. I'd like to see some of his more Breed-like qualities sneak into the rest of the series - I really like both geeky and badass Gideon!

4 Stars in my Sky!
