The Love Game by Emma Hart - Review

What they say: His challenge? Make her fall in love with him. Her challenge? Play the player. Until life changes the rules of the game.

Maddie Stevens hated Braden Carter on sight. Arrogant, egotistical, and the playboy of the University of California, Berkeley, he's everything her brother Pearce has taught her to despise. So why, when the girls challenge her to play the player, doesn't she say no? She doesn't know either.

Braden wanted fiery little Maddie the second he laid eyes on her - and he'd do anything to have her, hence why he's agreed to make her fall in love with him. After all, it's the only way he'll get what he wants. Sex.

But, as Braden discovers, there's more to the girl from Brooklyn than he ever imagined - and he can't help but care about the broken girl behind those pretty green eyes.

Maddie finds Braden isn't just a walking erection - he actually has feelings. He can be sweet, funny and his good looks don't exactly hurt. That means trouble - but when her brother Pearce turns up in Berkeley begging for her help, she realises Braden and Pearce aren't so alike anymore. And maybe, just maybe, they're exactly what each other needs.

What I say: Aww...The Love Game is cute, sexy and fun! It fits nicely into the NA genre by combining interesting leads and hilarious secondary characters with adult situations and by throwing in a whole lot of partying.

Maddie is a great heroine, who really made me laugh. She's sassy and stubborn, yet wounded and vulnerable. Braden is the all-American dream; hot, sporty, good in bed, confident and a manwhore. He's also caring, fun, uber sexy and is willing to open himself to pain (for the right girl of course). I really enjoyed watching these two playing the game and making plenty of mistakes along the way.

The secondary characters were brilliant - Kay had some amazing one liners and literally had me crying with laughter (burgers anyone?).  I have to admit I kept waiting for Megan to have some kind of evil ulterior motive (other than meddling), but was pleased with the result. I'm looking forward to her battle with Aston in the next book!

The backstory, in particular Maddie's was really sad. I have to say it made me almost glad that I don't have a brother. I still think there's more story to be had with Pearce & Abbi. I would have liked to see Kyle causing more trouble as I enjoyed seeing Braden's jealous side.

The Love Game is a great NA book by the lovely Emma Hart, one that is definitely worth a read. Yes, I easily guessed the ending but I devoured to book in one afternoon and it pulled me out of my current sci-fi/urban fantasy obsession!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Then let's make a deal. If you kick my ass, I get to touch yours."
  • Fuck this. When life gets hard, ask Google. Google knows everything.
  • "You're a total pig-" "Hey!" "But you're the best kind of pig."
  • "I haven't had my coffee yet. If he'd tried that, I would have bitten him." Maddie Stevens, biting me? Yes. Fucking. Please. "Sounds promising."
