Blast from the Past reviews - Onyx by Jennifer L Armentrout

Blast from the Past...! Onyx (Lux Book 2)

What they say: Being connected to Daemon Black sucks… Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town… The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes… I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me? No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies...

What I say: I loved Obsidian, but Onyx is even better! I laughed, cried, nearly threw my kindle at the wall and often swooned!

Before I read Onyx the first time I was worried Daemon's realisation at the end of Obsidian would ruin the flow between Katy and Daemon. The joy in book 1 was their banter. The banter channelled Daemon's denial of his feeling's towards Katy and her insistence that she doesn't want him. With Daemon deciding to go all out to win Kat over I did worry that they may have lost their spark. It was a needless worry because Daemon's pursuit actually has the opposite effect. We get to see possessive and bad ass Daemon, but more importantly a romantic and thoughtful Daemon. The Christmas tree scene was so sweet...!

Jennifer introduces new characters in Onyx, including members of the DOD, Blake and more Arum/Luxens. Daemon's reaction to Blake was hilarious, I actually really enjoyed seeing his jealous side (manifesting in his inability to call Blake by his real name).

Kat and Daemon's chemistry is still super hot in this book and I enjoyed how hard Daemon had to work to convince her his feelings were real. Between the two of them they have some punchy lines which were fab to read.

A LOT happens in Onyx, most of it spoilery, but the DOD are in town and the consequences are endless. Kat and Daemon grow closer but they are keeping some epic secrets which spiral out of control. Kat and Dee friendship suffers as a result of the secrets, leading to a devastating end.

Kat is reluctant to trust Daemon, yet she easily trusts Blake. I found her actions frustrating at times although considering how Daemon initially treated her I can understand why. I wanted her to realise how into her Daemon really was.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Onyx will drag you through the ringer, but it is so worth it! Plus anybody with Daemon Black in can never be bad!!

5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • Daemon was a total babe, but he was stab-worthy, which, at times, zeroed out the babe part.
  • "I'm not Buffy!" I yelled. A slow grin pulled at his lips. "You are definitely cuter than Buffy."
  • The windows in his eyes to all those emotions slammed shut, leaving me trembling in the dark. And I knew. I knew I'd hurt him more than I thought possible.
  • "Doesn't make anything he did okay, but I get that now. I... I would do anything to protect you."
