Lover Mine (The Black Dagger Brotherhood Book 8) by J.R. Ward Review

What they say: In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.

What I say: Oh John Matthew!! We've been waiting for so long for you to get your HEA and to realise you're a 'male of worth' (J.R. Ward's words not mine). After my love of Z and Rehv's books, I wasn't sure how I would feel about John's story. I think a lot of this was down to my disinterest in Xhex. Oh how I had underestimated the Warden though because she has delivered yet again and John's story is ace!

Lover Mine picks up where Lover Avenged finishes, Xhex has been kidnapped by Lash and the Brothers are trying to find her. Lash has easily fallen into the evil villain role and is a complete and utter psycho. The abuse Xhex has suffered in the past and by Lash is horrific and hard to read. I have a huge amount of respect for Xhex though because she's a true fighter.

Another intriguing element was all the flashbacks to Darius and Tohr's early friendship. In a role reversal to Tohr and John, Darius was a father figure to the young Tohr. The links between Tohr, Darius, Xhex and John go back for hundreds of years and answer a lot of questions about their past. Although it should be noted that these flashbacks also provide many more questions which Ward has yet to answer.

Payne has a bigger role in Lover Mine and she provides quite the ending...! When it comes to her children the Scribe Virgin has a lot to answer for. I loved the scene where Vishous and Payne met, it was so sad and sets the next book up nicely!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • He'd done ten thousand strangers, men and women and males and females alike... he was Wilt Chamberlain with fangs.
  • He was a please-and-thank-you kind of male. Qhuinn was more of a fuck-off-and-die type.
  • "_hung like a fire hose and did you twelve different ways to Sunday. Congratulations. Your subconscious should be directing porn."
  • "You're not half the male you could be because of what was done to you. You're twice what anyone else is because you survived."
  • "Well, you know... you're not exactly the kind of female a guy would get flowers for. Sort of limits my options."
