ARC Review: Geli Voyante's Hot Or Not by Elle Field

What they say: 'I think I will always be known as the Hot or Not girl, defined by it for the rest of my career. Even my tombstone will read: Angelica “Geli” Voyante, beloved trendsetter. Death? Not Hot.

Yet, it doesn’t sound right. Why won’t anyone realise that there is more to me than this fickle persona I have inadvertently become?'

Geli Voyante is bored of being the Hot or Not girl, even if it has the perk of sitting next to Theo, the newspaper's very Hot political columnist. She's also getting a little lonely being single.

When her arch-nemesis Tiggy Boodles gets engaged, and other loved ones start to settle down, it's time for Geli to convince Theo that she’s not as shallow as her column suggests and, more importantly, she’s the one for him. Geli should remember though that there are always two sides to every story, and that applies to people too...

Geli Voyante's Hot or Not is out October 17th 2013 - add to your Goodreads shelf today!

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review!

What I say (review): I laughed my butt off reading Geli's story (er in a good way though). When it comes to dating Geli has got to be one of the most unfortunate female leads I have come across in a long time. There's the cheating ex, the unattainable office crush and the off limits new guy.

Writing her own hugely successful newspaper column 'Hot or Not', Geli is something of a trendsetter, but underneath the obvious glamour of her job she's bored and unhappy. Geli calls herself Trouble with a capital 'T' because her past dating experiences have ended in disaster. I found myself in hysterics at some of her antics (marathon anybody?)!

I won't divulge much about the potential love interests Theo, Eric and Calvin because it's kinda spoilery, but I will say I had my doubts about a certain someone from the start.

I loved how Geli had an arch-nemesis, the only other person I've seen with one outside of comics is Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Her nemesis Tiggy was awful yet brilliant to read about. Tiggy is so unbelievably horrible she becomes something of a joke and I couldn't believe how obsessed she was with Geli.

In certain places Geli reminded me of Arielle from Elle's first book Kept (you can read my review of Kept here), but I think Geli was far more capable than Arielle and was better at restraining herself (or at least until Arielle figures out what she wants).

4 Shiny Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • I am the sweetest, loveliest, non-sexy girl there ever was and I include the fictional likes of Mary Poppins, Nana from Peter Pan.
  • Most of the men I seem to meet are tight-fisted cheap skates, sadly not just limited to their wallets. Their bedroom presents, or lack-of, fall also into the stingy category.

Author Spotlight: Elle Field is a twenty-something chick lit author who lives in South London with her boyfriend. She enjoys exploring and photographing Blighty's capital, seeing far too many musicals, and eating her way around London's culinary delights.

Her debut novel Kept was released earlier this year, and her next novel Geli Voyante's Hot or Not is out now. Watch out in 2014 for the release of Kept's sequel, as well as The Dirtification of Tabitha-Rose!
