Review: Lover Unleashed (Black Dagger Brotherhood 9) by J.R. Ward

Black Dagger Brotherhood Reader Challenge.

What they say: Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

What I say: Lover Unleashed is, in theory Payne and Manny's story, but in actuality it's split between them and Vishous, Jane, Wrath, Butch and Quinn.

Lover Unleashed picks up right after the last book ended. Payne is gravely injured after her fight with Wrath. V sends Jane to locate her former boss and surgeon extraordinaire Manny to operate on her. After getting over the shock of Jane being well... alive (sort of), Manny agrees to help. This is where the insta-love comes in - he takes one look at Payne and bam, he's hooked.

Insta-love usually really annoys me, but considering Payne is the daughter of a deity I guess Manny can be forgiven for his instant attraction. Payne and Manny's relationship is really sweet and paranormal aside, kinda believable. I won't spoil the whole how is Ward going to get round the human issue again, but it makes sense.

With Lash gone Ward introduces the Band of Bastards as the adversaries. Look out Wrath, Xcor is coming to get ya!

On to V and Jane; Ward addresses the issue of their not-fully mated status and Jane's life as a ghost. They are really pulled through the ringer in Lover Unleashed and I spend half the book in a state of panic that V may do the dirty on her and the rest wondering if V can ever move on from his past. Enter Butch with a gag and a spoon...! SO good!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • Butch tightened his grip on his cell and wished there were an app that let you reach through a phone and bitch slap someone.
  • "All I see are ankles and wrists--and FYI, you're pulling a Mileyfrickin'-Cyrus with that belly flash. Not attractive."
  • "I think we're dating now." As V barked out a laugh, the cop shrugged. "Come on....I got you naked. You wore a damn corset. And don't get me started about the sponge bath afterward."
    "Fucker." "To the end."
  • "I don’t think my sister is old enough to have sex." "V, she’s the same age you are." He frowned for a moment. Was she? Or had he been born first?
