Review: Unchained by J. Lynn / Jennifer L Armentrout

Nephilim Rising #1

What they say: Between the pissed off creatures that want demon-hunter Lily Marks dead and the fallen angel who just...wants her, Lily is about ready to trade in forever for a comfy job in a cubicle farm.

The fact that she and Julian are civil to one another is enough to have her thrown out of the Sanctuary, but she can't shake her not-so-angelic stalker or how he brings her dangerously close to ecstasy.

Her forbidden relationship with Julian provides the perfect fuel for suspicion when a traitor is discovered to be working within the Sanctuary. Lily quickly finds herself hunted by well, everyone.

Her only hope is to discover the real traitor before she loses everything--and she'll need Julian's help. That is, if Julian is really there to help her...and not destroy her.

Yeah, being a Nephilim isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

What I say: Lily is  my kinda gal! She's  all kinds of bad ass and is the queen of sarcasm. I've read heaps of stories about angels, fallen angels, demons and their half-human Nephilim children (I love Cassie Clare's Shadowhunters), but in Unchained Jennifer adds her own unique twist and creates her own mythology.

Nephilim are charged with protecting humanity from the fallen and other nasties. As a Nephilim Lily is expected to hunt these evil creatures and to have nothing to do with the fallen. One massive problem is Julian. Not only is Julian an immensely powerful and beautiful fallen, he's also sort of fixated on Lily and has taken to stalking her. I genuinely wonder how she's resisted him for so long!?

Aside from a potential forbidden romance there's also the huge fact the Nephilim have a traitor in their midst. I had my suspicions early on about who this was but I won't spoil anything for you.

Unchained isn't just Lily's story, it also introduces newly discovered Nephilim Michael. Michael's sections/POV's were really enjoyable and added something extra to the story. I kept thinking of the TV show Supernatural in certain sections, which is no surprise as Jennifer is openly a big fan of the show (I can't say more without getting all spoilery).

Jennifer always includes a plethora of great secondary characters and Unchained is no exception. I wanted to slug Micah at times and REALLY Nathaniel?!

There are some great naughty bits so be prepared for some smutty fun, but don't worry it's not a smut only sorta book. Most of the 'action' includes butt kicking and some great baddie smackdowns!

Bring on book 2!!!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Do you think I'd get an endless supply if I dated Ronald McDonald? The clown makeup scares the shit out of me, but it would be worth it."
  • "You taste like Heaven. I would know." She rolled her eyes, doing her best to stop her grin. "You've waited all day to use the one, right?"
  • A rabid opossum would have been a smarter choice.
