Review: Kiss Of Fire by Rebecca Ethington

Imdalind series book #1

What they say: Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn't know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn't want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her. The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won't let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to.
The scar is the reason she is being hunted.

If only she knew that she was.

If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.

Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; only he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.

What I say: Kiss of Fire is the story of 16-year-old social outcast, Joclyn. After being bitten by a strange insect as a child, she has an odd scar which she keeps hidden at all times - not ever her childhood best friend, the extremely handsome Ryland has seen it.
Joclyn has started developing one hell of a crush on Ryland and feels extremely awkward about it. Ryland is the town's rich boy with a controlling and nasty father. He has always looked after Jos and is quite obviously in love with her. I enjoyed watching their relationship change and it reminded me of all those awkward teenage moments we've all suffered from. I enjoyed Ryland's devotion to Jos and the sweet ways he had been secretly protecting her.
Ethington is slow to reveal the meaning behind the scar, and the reader discovers the truth about Joclyn at the same time she does. I really liked the secondary characters, and found myself really intrigued by Ilyan. I actually found him a better love interest than Ryland and kept thinking about Legolas whenever Ilyan was mentioned. Wyn was brilliant addition; all good female MC's need a great girl BFF!
Be prepared - there are quite a few typo's and formatting issues in the book, but it doesn't detract too much from the story.
I know Jos is only just 16, but even so I did find her immature at times. However, it is worth considering her non existence relationship with her absent father and her very recent introduction into this strange world. A sweet story, free from naughty bits.

3.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • "Pie? Is that code for something dirty?" My voice rang out in noxious laughter at Wyn's comment.
  • Ilyan had found me, saved my life; but in some weird way it felt disrespectful to Ryland to even let him touch me.
  • "I don't have any friends. You can be my friend if you would like." He was so eager, so much like he had been that first day when we had met.
