Bitter Sweet Love Review

The Dark Elements (#0.5 prequel novella) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

What they say: In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.
Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.
And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...

What I say: I'm such a fangirl when it comes to JLA and thankfully Bitter Sweet Love is just as snarky, witty, action packed and as brill as her other books.

Bitter Sweet Love is a novella so it's short, but it acts as a great intro to Jennifer's new paranormal/fantasy series The Dark Elements. Where Covenant focused on Demigods and Lux focuses on aliens, Bitter Sweet love is about gargoyles! I have never read a series about gargoyles before (the closest I've come to gargoyles is the troll Tyrell series by Amanda Hocking). The brilliant thing about this is that is allows Jennifer to create her own shiny new mythology and set her own rules.

I don't want to give too much away but in brief: Jas (Jasmine) and Dez were childhood best friends and confidants until Dez left after it was announced they were to mate - talk about insulting! Mating is important to Gargoyles and is a lifelong, no-way-out commitment. Gargoyles are dying out and females are expected to produce lots of babies. Females are protected and sheltered (much to Jas's disgust). Three years later Dez is back and he wants Jas, I'll let you discover wants happens next...!

Jennifer always creates great female characters who are strong, vulnerable and spunky. There were definitely hints of Daemon Black in Dez, although I believe one of the main characters in the full length forthcoming story White Hot Kiss was the inspiration for Daemon (Jennifer wrote White Hot Kiss before Obsidian).

Bitter Sweet Love sets up The Dark Elements series nicely and introduces Layla and the two potential guys in her life.

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:

  • "Well trusting anything named Herbert is a bad idea."
  • He clamped his arms around my waist as I started to wriggle away. "Jas," he said, his voice dropping low. "You should stop squirming." Then he paused. "Or not. I'm kind of partial to it, honestly."
  • Seeing him in his true form for the first time in years, I could no longer view him as the handsome boy I had fallen for. Dez was now a full-grown male - a warrior at that.
