What they say: Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

I received a copy from Mia Sheridan in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: I think by now it must be clear how much I enjoy Mia Sheridan books - Archer's Voice was my only 5 Star review of 2014 and I loved Calder & Eden's stories! I think the reason I like Mia Sheridan's writing so much is because she really connects with the reader and draws us into her story. Her books always drag you through the emotional ringer, making you feel everything - Kyland is no exception!

Told in spilt POV the story focuses on high school seniors Kyland and Ten (Tenleigh) as they compete for a special scholarship. The scholarship will enable the winner to escape from the depressed mining town and extreme poverty. I know this sounds really depressing and it is, but it's also a really inspiring and hopeful story - it's beautiful! The every day struggles faced by Kyland, Ten and the people living on the mountain are heartbreaking and oh-so-devastating. I don't want to spoil the plot by going into too many details about Ky and Ten's life but be prepared to cry, a LOT!

Both characters have their fair share of secrets and reasons why they want to escape but are not prepared to fall in love. On certain occasions I started to doubt one of them before realising everything was done for a reason. As beautiful as their story is, there were times when I nearly flipped out and thought I was having heart palpitations - I was feeling the despair along with Sheridan's characters.

I couldn't decide whether Ky's or Ten's backstory was more upsetting; but with every revelation I found myself getting more and more desperate for a HEA. Ky's suffering in particular and the many sacrifices he made, were simply heartbreaking. He was forgotten and alone but I loved how Ten truly saw him!

Kyland is a story about never giving up and fighting against circumstance. I don't remember reading a book about more selfless characters and I enjoyed the hopeful message running throughout.
4.5 Stars in my Sky!
