Title: Rome (Marked Men #3)

Author: Jay Crownover

Genre: New Adult
Publication Date: January 7th 2014

Publisher: William Morrow an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing

Synopsis:

Cora Lewis is a whole lot of fun, and she knows how to keep her tattooed bad boy friends in line. But all that flash and sass hide the fact that she’s never gotten over the way her first love broke her heart. Now she has a plan to make sure that never happens again: She’s only going to fall in love with someone perfect.

Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He’s stubborn and rigid, he’s bossy and has come back from his final tour of duty fundamentally broken. Rome’s used to filling a role: big brother, doting son, super soldier; and now none of these fit anymore. Now he’s just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes the only color on his bleak horizon.
Perfect isn’t in the cards for these two, but imperfect might just last forever . . .

Author Spotlight: I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.

I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.

What I say: It's no secret how much I loved the previous books RULE and JET but for some reason I wasn't expecting to enjoy ROME as much. Thankfully Jay Crownover has done it again and Rome's story is just as good (if not better) than Rule's and Jet's!!

I don't want to spoil ANY of the plot for y'all (I'm sure this sounds better when not in my British accent) so I'll keep the details brief. Rome is still in his ex-soldier funk and is not coping with being home after the revelations about Remy. Being the protector is all Rome knows; he fought to protect his loved ones, he looked after the twins and was a big brother figure to Shaw, but everything is different now and Rome doesn't know his place. The army was his life and it wasn't his choice to leave; for somebody who likes order and control this is a hard thing to accept.

I LOVE Cora!! She's always been funny, bold and cute but I never really felt we got to know her on a deeper level until now. It was great to get a deeper insight into her motivations and a look into her past. As a fellow short person who also gets called Half-Pint I really enjoyed Cora's fiery temper and how she keeps all those huge guys in line.

On paper Rome and Cora are so different that they shouldn't work and should be a total disaster (and some of the time they are) but from the first chapter of ROME I liked the idea of them as a couple, which was weird because I was previously rooting for a Cora/Rowdy hook up!

In with the drama, angst, love, lust and tattoos there are some really funny and heartwarming moments. Rome thinking about Cora piercing Rule was really funny!

The entire gang are back in ROME and there are some changes coming (mostly good so don't panic). All of the characters have really grown into themselves since the series began in RULE; don't get me wrong they are most definitely the same badass hotties we all love, but Rule and Jet have matured a lot. Jay Crownover introduces some new secondary characters to the series who helped Rome to find his focus.

After certain revelations I'm really looking forward to Nash's story next and to see where Jay Crownover takes the series.

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:

  • Captain No-Fun better get with the program real fast or it was going to get ugly.
  • "I don't know, Half-Pint, something tells me reigning you in is probably a pretty good time."
  • "It just messes with my already overworked mind when you tell me one thing and then look at me like you want to lick me all over like an ice cream cone in the same breath."
  • "I don't know what to say." "Good, because half the time when you open your mouth, I wanna punch you."
