Review - This Raging Light

THIS RAGING LIGHT
by Estelle Laure

Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

Can the best thing happen at the worst time?

Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she’s about to experience
when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend’s brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure’s soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: **Note** This Raging Light covers some pretty dark/upsetting topics which some readers may find distressing.

Lucille's family has broken down and she's left with he responsibility of looking after her little sister Wren. I'm not going to delve too much into Lucille's family situation or her back story for fear of spoiling anything. I did find myself irrationally angry with her Mother. I kept wondering who does that? I particularly loved Wren, as far as little sisters go, she's super cute.

For the most part, Lucille handles everything really well. She displays remarkable strength of character. I really wasn't sure about the secrets and how she handled things with Digby. Digby for his part was extremely supportive of Lucille's situation, but at the same time he did seem incapable of making a decision (he share the blame with Lucille for this one too) and he does some questionable things.

Without giving anything away: I feel as though there are still a few questions left to answer because I couldn't 100 percent tell you exactly how everything ends. Is this a bad thing? Well no, not necessarily, but in this case it left me feeling a little unsettled.

I liked Laure's writing style because she approached the tricky subjects with sensitivity. I did find it difficult to warm to Lucille and wasn't totally convinced by the romance. Did I like the story? Yes, but I would have like a more developed ending.

3 Stars in my Sky!
