Review - Night Study

Night Study - Soulfinders #2
by Maria V. Snyder

What they say: Ever since being kidnapped from the Illiais Jungle as a child, Yelena Zaltana's has been fraught with peril. But the recent loss of her Soulfinding abilities has endangered her more than ever before. As she desperately searches for a way to reclaim her magic, her enemies are closing in, and neither Ixia nor Sitia are safe for her anymore. Especially since the growing discord between the two countries and the possibility of a war threatens everything Yelena holds dear.

Valek is determined to protect Yelena, but he's quickly running out of options. The Commander suspects that his loyalties are divided, and he's been keeping secrets from Valek...secrets that put him, Yelena and all their friends in terrible danger. As they uncover the various layers of the Commander's mysterious plans, they realize it's far more sinister that they could have ever imagined.

I received a a copy from the publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: Night Study starts off right after the end the previous book so you really need to have read Shadow Study to understand what is going in (I would personally read all of the Ixia books first, but my friend started the series with Shadow Study and seemed to be fine with events although she had missed odd details).

I enjoyed Night Study more than the previous instalment, because not only do we get to see more of my fav couple, Yelena and Valek together, but we are treated to insights from all around the realm.

Not only does Yelena have a mystery to solve but she's got to face her new circumstances head on, to learn to accept or to work around her new limitations. The Yelena we see now, rather than at the very beginning of the series in Poison Study, is much wiser and more levelled headed. BUT she still retains enough of her own spirit to be the character we all loved from the start.

Valek certainly goes through several transformations and trials in Night Study and I was amazed at how adaptable he became.

One thing I wasn't necessarily expecting, but was pleasantly surprised by, was the romance. We all know Yelena has a way of bringing out Valek's softer side, but there are a few really sweet and touching moments, where Valek really gets his romance on... This being said, you really wouldn't want to cross the guy or mess with Yelena!

I'm not going to discus the plot because I don't want to give anything away, but I will say the story took a few unexpected turns and I spent most of the book in a heightened state of Owen related paranoia.

It's always nice to catch up with Leif, Janco and Ari - they never fail to make me smile, but it was nice to meet some other fun new characters. I still have lots of questions as to where the story is going, but I'm really looking forward to Dawn Study - if only the wait wasn't so long...

4.5 Stars in my Sky!
