Review: Game On by Wylie Snow

What they say: Secrets, lies, lust ... whatever it takes to win.

Clara Bean, Europe's most respected restaurant critic, lands on American soil to do a promotional tour with a sports icon. But how will she keep her career-ending secret from her deliciously handsome new partner? She quickly learns that all games have rules, even falling in love.

Luc Bisquet can't seem to score any points with sassy, sexy Clara despite the palatable chemistry between them. But he's willing to endure as many penalties as it takes to crack her icy reserve, because winning is everything. Game on.

I Received a Complimentary Copy in Exchange for my Honest Review!

What I say: I have to admit the combination of the blurb and cover both intrigued and confused me. Looking at the pretty cover I was expecting leading lady, Clara Bean to end up playing Hockey herself, but the blurb presents her as a foodie. When I started reading Game On I realised it didn't actually matter either way!

English restaurant critic, Clara finds her food column 'Biscuit and Bean' in jeopardy when the paper is taken-over by a big American firm and the staff are summoned to Miami. After the unfortunate death of Biscuit (and unbeknown to her), Clara's new boss decides she needs a new Biscuit. Her new Biscuit/writing partner is former Ice Hockey legend Luc Bisquit!

Clara and Luc have an instant chemistry, but after an unfortunate event/misunderstanding Clara decides to deny their connection and imposes some rules. Luc is less than impressed by these rules and decides to play a different game. I won't say much about the plot, which is told from both Clara and Luc's POV, except to say they are both keeping secrets and struggling to accept certain issues in their lives.

Oh Bean you luck gal! Luc is sensitive, kind, hot, rich and talented, but in real life I think Clara would have one hell of a time keeping all the puck bunnies away! Clara was really funny, although I'm not sure how much was intentional on her part. As a Brit I did find some of the 'posh' English dialogue a bit forced or unnatural at times. Yes, I do say 'Bugger' but most Brit's don't actually say it as often as Clara and her bestie Lydia do.

Hugh Grant English aside, I enjoyed Game On, and as a girl who likes her sports I enjoyed all the Hockey talk! If you want a funny, contemporary romance then give Game On a try!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • She decided to send him a telepathic message to hurry things along: "Luuuuc... come to bed. Luuuuc... I want your body. Luuuuc... I am your fathah."
  • "Tell me something, frogman. Do you dream in French or English?" "French, mostly. Why?" "So when I show up in your dreams, I know in which language to tell you to fuck off."
  • "I could pull a Charlie and tell you about my politics and religion." "You could, but I'd rather hear your views on spanking."
