Blast from the Past Review: Midnight Awakening by Lara Adrian

Midnight Breed Book #3

What they say: With a dagger in her hand and vengeance on her mind, Darkhaven beauty Elise Chase prowls Boston’s streets in search of retribution against the Rogue vampires who took from her everything she cherished. Using an extraordinary psychic gift, she tracks her prey, well aware that the power she possesses is destroying her. She must learn to harness this gift, and for that she can turn to only one man—the deadliest of the Breed warriors, Tegan.

No stranger to loss, Tegan knows Elise’s pain. He knows fury, but when he slays his enemies it is with ice in his veins. He is perfect in his self-control, until Elise seeks his aid in her personal war. An unholy alliance is forged—a bond that will link them by blood and vow—and plunge them into a tempest of danger, desire, and the darkest passions of the heart...

What I say: Midnight Awakening is the third book in the Midnight Breed vampire series (I suggest you read the first two books and reviews before starting Midnight Awakening). The difference with this instalment compared to the first two, is that we have already met both the male and female leads (Tegan and Elise). Unlike Gabrielle and Tess, Elise is not an unsuspecting human woman. She is aware of the Breed and her status as a Breedmate, having been mated and widowed before. Recently Elise's world has been about pain and loss. Similarly Tegan also lost his mate and has become bitter and angry, constantly at risk of falling into bloodlust and going Rogue.

Elise had previously been a fairly sheltered and reserved character, living within the safety and confines of the Breed Darkhaven society. The death of her son Camden (in the last book) awoke her strong spirit and the need for vengeance. I enjoyed this stronger side to Elise, because I'm not a fan of weak female characters and I liked seeing her grow and stand up to, and for Tegan.

Tegan was something of a revelation. He had previously been portrayed as a cold, cutting menace, but with Elise he was completely different and so much more. It's also fun to see such a fearsome warrior being bossed around by such a tiny woman.

I was expecting more awkwardness and some kind of smackdown with Chase. I do suspect there may be more to this story in later books. It's also nice to see characters from the other books making an appearance and continuing their stories.

The plot involves some of the characters travelling to another Darkhaven in Berlin. This allows Lara Adrian to introduce new characters to enrich the series and also to create new questions and theories. My fav instalment in the series so far!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • He exhaled a sharp laugh. "I just saved your sweet little ass, female. I don't think it's too much to ask that you tell me why I had to."
  • Without the order to intervene, they'd been a bloodthirsty pestilence that made even the worst Rogue look like a misbehaving frat boy.
  • Even half-human himself, as was all of the Breed, Tegan had long ago given up needing to be a hero.
