Novella Reading Week - Reviews

My Novella Reading Week Reviews - Short and sweet!

I ended up having to change my novella list (I got sent some novella ARCs to read for publisher reviews so my reviews of those will come separately as I'm not allowed to post them yet). BUT here are the reviews for the novellas I did manage from my original list...!

Crossing The Line by Katie McGarry (A Pushing the Limits novella)

What they say: Lila McCormick, Echo's best friend from Pushing the Limits, first met Lincoln Turner when tragedy struck both their lives. But she never expected their surprise encounter would lead to two years of exchanging letters—or that she’d fall for the boy she’s only seen once. Their relationship is a secret, but Lila feels closer to Lincoln than anyone else. Until she finds out that he lied to her about the one thing she depended on him for the most.

Hurting Lila is the last thing Lincoln wanted. For two years, her letters have been the only thing getting him through the day. Admitting his feelings would cross a line he’s never dared breach before. But Lincoln will do whatever it takes to fix his mistakes, earn Lila’s forgiveness—and finally win a chance to be with the girl he loves.

What I say: I really enjoyed Pushing the Limits and I have been meaning to read this novella for ages. Crossing the Lines is a short and sweet story centred around Lila and Lincoln who have been pen pals since they meeting years ago and they fall in love from afar.

Echo is away travelling with Noah and Lila is left alone bored, stressed and confused about her feelings for Linc. Linc has a pretty terrible home life and Lila's letters help him cope.

I really enjoyed the story, and yes I know it's a novella but I would have liked a few more pages, but I guess the beauty of it was bridging the gap and giving secondary characters their own story. Fans of Pushing the Limit will enjoy this as will those who appreciate a good short story!

4 Stars in my Sky!

Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout (A Lux novella #0.5)

What they say: The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

What I say: With my love of all things by Jennifer L. Armentrout I cannot work out how I haven't read Shadows before now?! Shadows is set before the events in Obsidian but can easily be read first or even as a standalone novella (Katy has not moved there yet and so isn't in the book).

I loved how even though Shadows is Dawson and Bethany's story, Jennifer includes lots of insights into Daemon and Dee's lives too! I actually think reading the novella explained a lot in terms of Daemon's reaction to Katy in Obsidian.

I wasn't expecting to like Dawson as much as Daemon, but I totally did. Dawson is very laidback compared to his brother, yet equally as motivated and protective. Dawson and Beth have the insta-love thing going on, but their relationship builds slowly and is very believable. Dawson fights for Beth from the very beginning and as Daemon points out in Onyx or Opal Dawson really is the brave one. He's prepared to give everything for the girl he loves.

Since reading Shadows and the other Lux books, I've discovered there's little more upsetting than a foregone conclusion. If like me you've already read the other books in the series then you'll already know what happens to Dawson and Beth, yet watching or reading it actually unfold is really sad. The most heart-breaking part for me was Dee and Daemon's reaction...! A great edition to the series.

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

I actually have two more novellas I'm currently reading as well!
So my lovelies, how did you all get on?
