Soldier (Talon 3) - Review

SOLDIER The Talon Saga – Book 3

 by Julie Kagawa

Published by MIRA Ink in paperback and eBook
5th May 2016

The third thrilling instalment in The Talon Saga from New York Times bestselling author Julie Kagawa.

When forced to choose between safety with the dragon organisation, Talon, and being hunted forever as an outcast, Ember Hill chooses to stand with Riley and his band of rogue dragons rather than become an assassin for Talon. She's lost contact with her twin brother, Dante, a Talon devotee, as well as Garret, the former-enemy soldier who challenged her beliefs about her human side and who she now shares a deep bond with. Ember is also struggling with the powerful and stirring nature of her inner dragon. Combined with the recent deaths and the deceit and guilt that have been tormenting her since joining Riley, she is worryingly withdrawing into herself, while a fiery anger rages inside of her. Riley understandably is concerned that Ember is struggling to cope with the recent chaotic events and what is ahead for the rogue gang – never a good sign for a young dragon being pushed further to the edge…

While Ember battles with her emotions and her inner dragon, Garret journeys alone to the United Kingdom, birthplace of the ancient and secret Order of St. George. Here he heads straight to the home of the Patriarch, the head of the Order of St George, to spy on his former brothers where he uncovers deadly and shocking secrets that will shake the foundations of dragons and dragon-slayers alike. The rogue dragons will need Garret's skills and insider knowledge of the Order to negotiate an impossible deal - and if they fail, there will be no way to stop all-out war.

Soldier is a heart-pounding modern adventure, set on both sides of the Atlantic, full of secret societies, forbidden love and dragons!

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: Soldier picks up where Rogue left off. Ember is confused and really flipping angry (rightly so). She's heartbroken over recent events (don't worry no spoilers here) and doesn't know who to trust.

With every new instalment in this series it seems as though more and more people want something from Ember; nobody is what they seem. In a world full of secrets and agendas it's no surprise that Ember is mistrustful and unsure of people's motivations.

The pacing is fast and Soldier is full of action - we're treated to lots of dragon and St. George fun and drama.

I'm always a little wary of a love triangle but I don't mind the potential romances in this series because both guys seem to fit in with the two very aspects of of Ember's life - I honestly don't know which way it's going to go. Do I have my favourite? Yes, but I actually like both Garrett and Riley.

Julie Kagawa is a master of balance. She always seems to include the right amount of teen drama and action. We never get too bogged down by the unimportant things. The war is really heating up on all sides and I loved getting more insights into St George and Talon.

Holy cliffy city over here right now, so prepare to begin the long wait for book 4!!

4 Stars in my Sky!
