Blast from the Past Review:
Veil of Midnight
by Lara Adrian

What they say: Bound by blood, addicted to danger, they'll enter the darkest—and most erotic—place of all.

A warrior trained in bullets and blades, Renata cannot be bested by any man—vampire or mortal. But her most powerful weapon is her extraordinary psychic ability—a gift both rare and deadly. Now a stranger threatens her hard-won independence—a golden-haired vampire who lures her into a realm of darkness…and pleasure beyond imagining.

A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breed—and his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. One woman stands in his way: the seductive, cool-as-ice bodyguard, Renata. But Renata’s powers are put to the test when a loved one, a child, is threatened and she’s forced to turn to Niko for help. As the two join forces, as desire fans the flames of a deeper hunger, Renata’s life is under siege by a man who offers the exquisite pleasure of a blood bond—and a passion that could save or doom them both forever...

What I say: My obsession with the Black Dagger Brotherhood series led me to the Midnight Breed books (Veil of Midnight is book #5). I have described the many similarities between the two book series' in past reviews so I'm going to avoid over analysing them and focus on Lara Adrian's story.

In Veil of Midnight Niko (Nikolai) is sent by the Lucan and the Order to locate Gen One vampire Sergei Yakut to discuss the recent killings. You'll remember from the previous book this part of Dragos the son of er Dragos (yep imaginative name) and his evil take-over-the-world-by-killing-all-gen-one-vamps-and-breeding-new-ones plan! Niko meets the beautiful Breedmate Renata, who happens to be Yakut's rather reluctant guard. Yakut is a vampire of the worse kind:  his is cruel, controlling and vicious.

Also living with Yakut, Renata and Yakut's other Breed guards is the young child and Breedmate Mira. Mira's Breedmate gift is precognition, her eyes show the future. Renata is extremely protective of Mira and endures a great deal to protect the little girl. Niko sees a vision of him and Renata in Mira's eyes, and the rest, as they say is history.

I loved Niko and his gift (control over nature) was both helpful and sort of beautiful. It's nice to see Adrian introducing a softer side to her Breed warriors. Renata's power is, quite simply, bad ass! She's my fav female in the series so far. With her gun shooting and knife throwing she reminded me of Kate Daniels from the paranormal series by Ilona Andrews.

Some of the other Order warriors make an appearance (yay more Tegan time) and I could not believe the direction Adrian took with Andreas Richen (the Berlin Darkhaven leader)! His book is up next, and I sense a rampage!!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • Either he should seriously consider looking into night courses with Vidal Sassoon, or he was a complete goner when it came to this female.
  • "He basically told me to shove it, and that was before I called him a sick f**k in need of a muzzle and choke collar."
  • Niko might have made a lame joke about the miraculous effects of his sexual prowess, but he knew it was a different kind of magic.
