Book Spotlight - Turtle Under Ice

Something different for Easter in that it has nothing to do with Easter!

Turtle Under Ice
by Juleah del Rosario

What they say: Rowena feels like her family is a frayed string of lights that someone needs to fix with electrical tape. After her mother died a few years ago, she and her sister, Ariana, drifted into their own corners of the world, each figuring out in their own separate ways how to exist in a world in which their mother is no longer alive.

But then Ariana disappears under the cover of night in the middle of a snowstorm, leaving no trace or tracks. When Row wakes up to a world of snow and her sister’s empty bedroom, she is left to piece together the mystery behind where Ariana went and why, realizing along the way that she might be part of the reason Ariana is gone.

Haunting and evocative—and told in dual perspectives—Turtle Under Ice examines two sisters frozen by grief as they search for a way to unthaw.

Recent Release - On the Come Up

On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas

What they say: Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.

On the Come Up is Angie Thomas’s homage to hip-hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working-class black families.

Whatcha Reading Wednesday - Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

I'm FINALLY reading this one!

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
by Gail Honeyman

What they say: No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

Cover Love - The Poet X

The Poet X
by Elizabeth Acevedo

I do firmly believe in not judging a book by it's cover but sometimes I find myself drawn to a book by whats on the outside before falling in love with the story inside...

I absolutely adore the beautiful cover for The Poet X because it's all kinds of quirky, creative and gorgeous!

What they say: A young girl in Harlem discovers slam poetry as a way to understand her mother’s religion and her own relationship to the world. Debut novel of renowned slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo.

Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.

But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about. With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself.

So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out, much less speak her words out loud. But still, she can’t stop thinking about performing her poems.

Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent.

Am Reading - Liberty: The Spy Who (Kind of) Liked Me

Liberty: The Spy Who (Kind of) Liked Me
by Andrea Portes

Ooh the undercover drama...

What is a hero? Paige Nolan knows.

Sean Raynes, the young man who exposed America’s unconstitutional spying techniques, is a hero, even if half the dum-dums in the country think he’s a traitor. And her journalist parents, who were captured by terrorists while telling stories of the endangered and oppressed—they were heroes, too. Or are—no one has ever told Paige if they’re still alive, or dead.

Not heroes? Anyone in the government who abandoned her parents, letting them rot somewhere halfway across the world.

And certainly not Paige herself, who, despite her fluency in five languages and mastery of several obscure martial arts (thanks, Mom!), could do nothing to save them.

Couldn’t, that is, until she’s approached by Madden Carter, an undercover operative who gives her a mission: fly to Russia, find Raynes, and discover what other government secrets he’s stockpiled. In exchange, he’ll reopen the case on her missing parents.

She’s given a code name and a cover as a foreign exchange student.

Who is a hero? Not Paige Nolan, but maybe, just maybe, Liberty is.

Review - The Stars Never Rise

The Stars Never Rise #1
by Rachel Vincent

What they say: Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

What I say: I have to admit I do sometimes find myself getting bored with the very many YA dystopian/fantasy crossovers out there, but with The Stars Never Rise I loved the crossover and thoroughly enjoyed Nina's story.

Nina lives in the not-too-distant future where the Church rules and society has been plagued by Demons. A lack of souls and high child mortality rates means pregnancy is strictly controlled and people live under the strict control of the Church - sin at your own peril...

The plot provides a terrifying look into a potentially dreadful future, as well as highlighting issues of religion or false religion. The people have lost their free will and are punished if they commit any sins or even think of questioning the Church.

I really liked Nina - she's my kinda heroine. Spunky yet shy, sweet yet fierce and loyal beyond anything. There's a very interesting romance and I loved Finn. I also really liked the fab secondary characters - Maddy And Grayson were easily my favs.

There are numerous surprises and twists, including one big one I really didn't see coming. Must read The Flame Never Dies NOW!!

YA Review - Frannie and Tru

Frannie and Tru
by Karen Hattrup

What the say: When Frannie Little eavesdrops on her parents fighting she discovers that her cousin Truman is gay, and his parents are so upset they are sending him to live with her family for the summer. At least, that’s what she thinks the story is. . . When he arrives, shy Frannie befriends this older boy, who is everything that she’s not–rich, confident, cynical, sophisticated. Together, they embark on a magical summer marked by slowly unraveling secrets.

What I say: I loved the drama, slow pace and often unfortunate tension between the characters in this cute YA contemporary story.

I've seen a few people mention a disconnect with the characters but I actually appreciated the distance and awkward feel. Karen Hattrup does a great job portraying the variety of problems teens face today. She tackles the potential pitfalls of first crushes, issues of gender and sexuality, religion and family in a sensitive and forthright manner.

Frannie isn't particularly likeable, but without making too great a generalisation, this can be said about a lot of teenagers. Emotions are heightened and Frannie is desperate to be liked and prove herself to Tru. I really wanted her to stand up to him and do things for herself a bit more.

Tru is Frannie's cool older cousin. She looks up to him and is thrilled when he comes to stay with her family for the summer. The tone gives a firm nod to Paper Towns and The Perks of Being a Wallflower but not in quite the same way. I also liked the analysis of the drama of The Great Gatsby, the commentary on society and levels of wickedness.

I loved the members of the band and Sparrow. I would have liked to read from Sparrow's POV, or even from the twins. I did initially think we needed to hear from Tru but the point of the books is that Tru remains something of a mystery - his POV would have removed this - sometimes the unknown is more intriguing...

Frannie and Tru is a Gloriously awkward coming of age story.

Release Week Blitz & Review: Fury

Fury - The Seven Deadly #3
by Fisher Amelie

Add to Goodreads

Can be read as a standalone.

Revenge is an euphoric thing. Trust me on this. Nothing compares to the release you get when you ruin someone’s life. When they’ve stolen important things. Things that didn’t belong to them. Things I revel in making them pay for.

What? Have I offended you? I’m not here to appeal to your delicate senses. I have no intention of placating your wishes or living within your personal belief system nor do I care if you hate me. And you will hate me. Because I’m a brutal, savage, cold-blooded murderer and I’m here for my revenge.

I’m Ethan Moonsong…And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most sacrificing man to the most feared and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: I really enjoyed the first two books in Fisher Amelie's The Seven Deadly series (Vain & Greed reviews) and have been impatiently waiting for Fury aka Ethan's story, ever since Cricket chose Spencer. I knew it was going to be explosive but I never could have guessed the direction Ethan would take and where Fisher Amelie would lead us.

As you can probably tell from the blurb and trailer (check it out here or above) Ethan is angry, he's flipping furious (I can totally get why). He can't get over his heartbreak and he's set on vengeance against Spencer for stealing his girl and future. I understand Ethan's fury; he was nice guy and loving boyfriend (he could have paid a little more attention to certain things) but he did everything for Cricket. They were a team, with a whole future planned out and suddenly he finds himself replaced by a rich guy. I have to admit as much as I really liked Ethan in Greed I wanted Cricket to pick Spencer. It's only when reading his POV that you get the full insight into Ethan's devastation and the consequences the events had on him.

When Fury starts nice guy Ethan is gone. He's so focused on how he's been wronged that he's loosing himself. It's only after reconnecting with old friend Finley (I'd never heard of Finley being a girls name before but I like it) that he starts to reassess the situation. I loved Finley, which was something of a revelation because I didn't expect her to be as awesome as she was - right, dude? (makes sense when you've read the book).

I can't focus too much on the events as I don't want to spoil anything about Ethan's and Finley's story. The plot takes MANY unexpected twists and turns. Some of which are more shocking than others. They may be surprising yet these events left me feeling hopeful. I would never have predicted the horrifying events and the circumstances they find themselves in, but I loved their journey.

The title is very apt because both Finley and Ethan are furious, just about very different things. Also they show they fury in different ways and have their own coping mechanisms.  The story is about how they deal with their anger, and looks at if they can move on from the past.

I really enjoyed Fury and the only teeny tiny thing I missed was a certain meet up, but I felt like this was handled in a different and refreshingly non-cliched manner - I can't say more without spoiling.

Who gets LUST?!

Read on for an excerpt:

The truck door slammed closed behind me as I reached for my hidden bottle, unscrewed the lid, and took a swig. It burned on its way down, alleviating that sick feeling in my stomach, albeit temporarily.
Slowly, ever so slowly, I walked toward the bakery. I kept as close to the storefronts as possible. When I reached Ceres, I stopped and leaned against the brick beside the window, knowing they couldn’t see me. Carefully, I peered into the window and saw them. Their backs faced me as they ordered at the counter.
            “My God,” I breathed.
There she was. It was the first time I’d seen either of them since the day in the forest when she chose him over me. It felt so surreal to me. Her hair had grown out a little and she’d gained weight, probably since the transplant went so well. I looked at Spencer. I bet the bastard was her hero. I couldn't help but think I could have just as easily been him. I could have been standing next to her in line at Ceres, waiting for our sweet potato sticky buns, laughing and feeling happy because I was with her.
I thought about what Finley told me earlier that morning. I thought she was wrong. Cricket would have been just as happy with me as she was with Spencer.
I studied them together. She bounced on her heels, talking animatedly, her hair swishing around her shoulders. She used her hands a lot when she spoke. I wondered what she was talking about. I wondered if she thought about me at all, if she gave a shit that she broke my heart, shattered it into a million pieces. She smiled at Spencer and they started laughing. Apparently not.
God, I hated him. I mean really hated the guy. I looked back at my truck and remembered that I kept my hunting knives in the glove compartment in case my mom’s brother Akule, the only one willing to talk to me on her side of the family, wanted to go hunting. He gave them to me for my eleventh birthday. They were beautiful. Two Spartan short swords with leather handles, and I knew what I was doing with them.
Akule is Echo River Indian, as was my mother. She left the tribe when she converted to Catholicism right out of high school, and they didn’t approve but Akule was young when she did and he was close to my mom, so he didn’t care. He would sneak into town and they would watch movies together at her apartment.
He taught me how to hunt with my hands in Echo River style from a young age but when my mom died, he made it a weekly trip to the mountains. We would spend entire weekends up there up until I turned nineteen and Cricket got really sick.
I looked back at Cricket. She brought her hand up to Spencer’s back. He followed suit and tucked his hand into her back pocket, incensing me. Immediately, I walked to my truck and opened the passenger side door. The knives sat in their sheaths in the glove box. I hadn’t touched them in months, and my hands itched to hold them again.
I reached for them but paused a few inches from the handles. My hands shook and my heart pounded.
“What are you doing?” I asked myself.
I shut the glove box and sat on the bench of my truck, my booted foot resting on the concrete below. I ran my hands through my hair and rested against the back of the seat, shocked I’d been even contemplating what I’d been pondering.
“What were you going to do?” I asked myself. “Murder him?”

Becoming Calder ARC Review

Becoming Calder
by Mia Sheridan

Add to Goodreads

What they say: There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a God and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places... From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

THIS IS THE FIRST PART IN A TWO-PART SIGN OF LOVE SERIES INSPIRED BY AQUARIUS. THE SECOND PART, FINDING EDEN, WILL RELEASE SIMULTANEOUSLY. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

I received a copy from Mia Sheridan in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: WOW! I think by now it must be pretty clear how much I loved Mia Sheridan's previous book Archer's Voice (read review here)?! It remains my only 5 Star review of the year! I was slightly nervous before starting Becoming Calder because I was concerned it wouldn't be able to compete with Archer's Voice. I shouldn't have worried because Becoming Calder is a fab read and a wonderful and heartbreaking story!

The book is simply beautiful and incredibly different. Becoming Calder was not at all what I was expecting but was wonderful to read. There's something about Sheridan's writing which always seems to stir up every conceivable emotion and feeling.

I know very little about the subjects covered and it's easy to be judgemental of the characters. BUT Sheridan handles the topics with such sensitivity, that although Calder and Eden's is very different from anything I'm ever like likely to experience, I never judged them.

At its core Becoming Calder is a love story. Calder and Eden are star-crossed, unique and forbidden. With every moment of sadness there was overwhelming hope and positivity. Sheridan highlights the dangers of powerful individuals and how when people are desperate for happiness they can often be lead down a destructive path. Calder and Eden have to fight for their love and to rise above expectations. Destiny is a tricky beast when you have little chance of controlling it.

I'm definitely far more sentimental than I thought. At certain points I was almost terrified of reading on because I kept waiting for something terrible to happen. It may seem like I'm being really vague, but the honest truth is I don't want to spoil any of this fantastic story for you.

I laughed, cried, shouted and gasped reading their story and was ready to hit something when I finished it. Becoming Calder is due to be released on 5th Oct and Sheridan has taken the remarkable step of releasing the next part of their story Finding Eden on the same day. This means you won't have to wait at all to see what happens to these unique characters. I imagine Finding Eden will be very different from Becoming Calder and I cannot wait to see what happens next!
