What I say: The concept is very clever. There are some Snow White sleeping in a coffin elements, with a twist. What I always enjoy about Holly Black's books is the world building and how the fae are not fluffy fairy tale creatures but far darker! 

For the most part, I liked Hazel as a character although would have liked more character development. I wasn't a big fan of all the random kissing. It was also nice the way things developed with Severin. I was glad we didn't get the usual girl ends up with the prince plot...

We are treated to changelings and fairy legends as well as the usual coming of age teen drama. The sections about Hazel's and Ben's forgetful and neglectful parents were hard to read but worked well in juxtaposition to the fairy world.

I'm a big fan of Holly Black's books and while I did enjoy The Darkest Part of the Forest, it wasn't my favourite of her stories! The writing has the usual HB description and detail but, and I'm surprised to be writing this, the plot isn't as compelling as I was expecting. I read another review, describing the plot as fragmented, which I sort of agree with. That being said I did like the story, I just wanted a little more. Perhaps I'm just greedy.

What I say: Alana is possessed by a vampire. Yep it was a new one for me too as most possession stories focus on spirits but I liked this take. The vampire, Charissa isn't exactly stable and is desperate to be free and doesn't care who she hurts *ahem* drinks and kills at night. Alana wakes up and is left to deal with the horrors and consequences of Charissa's actions.

Alana is feels a huge amount of guilt for Charissa's actions and struggles with what to do. When she wakes to find Charissa has 'befriend' ahem kidnapped Cole, a guy Alana had met and had an instant connection with, Alana is confused and furious as to why. I enjoyed seeing the connection between Alana and Cole grow, although I have to admit it took me a long time to warm to Alana because although I felt sorry for her situation I wanted her to be more proactive. As the story developed I began to like her more and really wanted her to find a way to break the curse and get rid of Charissa.

I liked the insights into the victims but I did feel that, at times at least, there was a little too much victim backstory because I wanted to see more of the action. Nikola was interesting... I'm trying to avoid spoilers here! 

I'm going to be wary of buying any antique mirrors for a while...

What I say: A JLA high fantasy, what's not to love?! Imagine all the usual JLA wit, inspiring and hilarious heroine, infuriating but awesome hero with bundles of swagger, combined with some pretty outstanding world building and you haven't even started to delve into From Blood and Ash! 

Reading the blurb I wasn't sure I'd like Poppy because lets be honest a trapped Maiden has the potential to be annoying and whiny, but luckily JLA has us covered and Poppy is brilliantly witty and kinda bad ass from the start. She's extremely loyal and I loved her rebellious side.

Hawke has everything a JLA hero should have, in that he's snarky, fierce, confident, and oh so swoon worthy. He's also kind and protective and is hiding vulnerability and a broken past. I certainly wouldn't mess with him.

It's a high fantasy so we get lots of detail about the location and battles. I could picture a certain dagger and almost hear the battle cries across the Rise. Eye roll to the Duke!

I loved the world building. I've read several stories including a variety of versions of the Atlantian myth but this is something different. We have the Ascended, the Craven, the Descenters, the Gods and Poppy! 

Twists, turns and betrayals keep Poppy and the reader guessing and oh the ENDING!!!

What I say: First up, I'm going to label this one a crossover! It doesn't entirely fit within one genre and that's totally fine. 

Next, try to stay with it! I initially found it a little hard to get into due to the award vibe. Yes, I know that was probably the point but, anyway after a little while I was hooked!

Araceli finds herself slap bang in the middle of a mystery. Disappearances, odd lights, uncomfortable feelings all make for an intriguing story. I grew to like Araceli and wanted her to find out what was going on.

I'm not sure about the ending but it certainly made me think. I liked the cross-time communication through the box. It's difficult to say much more without giving too much away...

What I say: I read Romanov a while ago so it feels like I've been waiting ages to write this review. To say I really enjoyed Romanov feels a bit strange considering what happens and the historical aspects, but I did enjoy Nastya's story in all its complicated and heartbreaking glory!

The story is about the infamous Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov (Nikolaevna) and her family and their fall from grace. We meet Anastasia, Nastya to her friends and family, in the midst of the Russian Revolution as the Romanov's face their dramatic decline and the collapse of the Russian monarchy.

If you're expecting lots of dramatic action than Romanov probably isn't the book for you because yes we see history or a version of it depicted on the pages, but the story is really about family, courage and love. Despite everything going on around her Nastya manages to find the good in people even when living in exile. 

I don't know enough about Russian history to be able to comment on the truths in the story and the elements of poetic license but I enjoyed the lighter moments and the hint of forbidden romance. As for the outcome well don't worry no spoilers here but I knew certain events were coming but I kept hoping something would change things. I remember watching the cartoon version of Anastasia years ago and always held out hope that maybe she did escape and was living freely out there somewhere. 

My favourite part of the story was Nastya. I liked her positivity mixed with realism and how she's portrayed as very different to how certain military people would have wanted her and her family to be seen.

What I say: I've never read anything like Star-Crossed so I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. It's a mixture of many things and is certainly unique! 

The story is parts YA dystopia, sci-fi and even fantasy, but is a little confusing at times, to the point where I wasn't sure who I liked and disliked.

As one of her father, the King's future heirs, Princess Vela is tasked with finding a way to save him. If only the best chance of success didn't involve risking her potential love interest Carr...

The world building is quirky and dramatic. In a society where food is extremely limited we meet the Eaters and Non-Eaters. The Eaters are elite members of society who are genetically able to produce food capsules/pills to help feed society. I'm not going to go into the how  of this, I'll leave it as a surprise. Let's just say that eating is encouraged and the larger you are, the more beautiful you are. 

The concept didn't always sit well with me as it had a strange WALL-E, Jetsons or Hungry meal-with-a-pill vibe, mixed with er feeding baby birds (still with me?), but it was memorable.

I liked Vela and the writing is full of witty moments and dramatic tension. I'm not sure about food as a subject matter, but it could scarily have a real sense of potential in real life with a world facing with global warming and finite resources.

What I say: I'm going to start by saying how much I have enjoyed Kylie Scott's Stage Dive & Dive Bar books. However I was completely thrown by the idea of her writing a YA story, BUT I knew I had to read it! In true KS form she totally rocked this very different contemporary story - shame on me for ever doubting her!
If you're expecting a light and fluffy teen romance then be prepared for a shock. TRUST is action packed, dramatic, and at times, really dark - but it's also funny and heartwarming. KS is never one to shy away from discussing the darker side of things and TRUST is no different. Due to the heavier topics and more mature themes I'm going to suggest this is a YA story for older teens and adults rather than middle grade or younger teens.
In TRUST KS has managed that rare thing of having two likeable leads. I loved both Edie and John. Edie's commentary made me laugh and cry. Her antics range from hilarious and bewildering to being upsetting and really sad at times. She embodies many of the self doubts and insecurities women, and not just young women, face today - she's extremely relatable. I particularly appreciated how she stays true to herself.
John perfectly demonstrates how we should never right people off or misjudge them. Not only does he repeatedly look after Edie, but he appreciates her for being herself and always encourages rather than controls.
I cannot recommend TRUST enough as a contemporary romance. For those of you who adamantly don't read YA stories, I'd definitely consider giving this one a chance because I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Well done KS!

“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”

“Not funny.”

I shrugged.

“You barely know the guy.”

“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”

“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.

“No we are not.” And I retreated.

“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.

Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”

“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”

“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back off.”

He said nothing.

Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”

He slowly shook his head.

“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”

“This is crazy.”

“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”

He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”

“I’m just trying to be practical.”

“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”

“It does to me.”

Again, he said nothing.
