Reign of Shadows - Review

Reign of Shadows
by Sophie Jordan

What they say: Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.

But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.

With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.

With lush writing and a star–crossed romance, Reign of Shadowsis Sophie Jordan at her best.

I received a copy from Harper 360 in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: I loved Reign of Shadows and cannot believe it has taken me this long to read it! In one hand it's a classic YA fantasy story but it's also a kinda dark, badass retelling of a few different fairy tales with a dystopian edge. There are hints of Rapunzel, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood woven into the plot, alongside zombie-vampire like creatures.

The world has been swallowed by darkness. Evil creatures hunt in the shadows and people are distrustful of everything and everyone. Luna has spent her life hidden away in a secret tower in the woods. Did I mention that Luna is the long presumed dead/lost Princess of Relhok?

Against everything she's been taught, Luna helps Fowler when he stumbles upon the tower. In a world where everything is a struggle and everybody only looks after themselves, this is rare and unusual. Luna finds herself fleeing to safety with Fowler and is desperate to prove she's not a burden, to be treated as an equal.

The story really does deserved to be read without spoilers so I'm going to avoid revealing anything more about the plot. I will point out that Sophie Jordan packs in plenty of surprises and twists galore.

I loved Luna and Fowler together and was desperate for them to see past the darkness and danger, to embrace each other...

My kindle nearly took an unscheduled trip across the room when I got to that cliffhanger ending but the good news is that book two, Rise of Fire is out very soon (links below). Gimme more!!

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

Reign of Fire (book two) is coming 7th Feb (US) Pre-order here!
