Glass Sword (Red Queen #2)
by Victoria Aveyard

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

Top Fav Book - I'm Still Loving Archer

I read so many new books that every now and again I like to celebrate some of my fav reads from the last few years.

Today I'm remembering Archer!

Archer's Voice (A Sign of Love novel)
by Mia Sheridan

What they say: When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer's Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE NOVEL. The first three books in the series need not be read to enjoy this book. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

What I say: Archer's Voice is part of Mia Sheridan's Signs of Love series but it's essentially a standalone book. I don't remember ever reading anything similar to it - I found the concept uniquely brilliant.

Main character, Bree, is a brilliant mix of fun and feisty, yet sweet and vulnerable. The book is told from her POV with a few from Archer. Both characters are damaged and vulnerable so it was wonderful watching them try to take charge of their lives and move forward. The past is a dangerous thing!

Archer may be silent but his voice comes across so clearly on every single page, and with his every action, that I found myself more and more drawn into his story and his suffering. I never once felt pity for Archer; he isn't that kind of character. Yes, he may be broken but he's a fighter and has such hidden strength and vulnerability. Archer made me consider how I'd cope without my voice. I'd like to think I'd be perceptive but I'm not sure. Many of us like to disappear inside our own head at times but Mia Sheridan made me really think about how I'd feel if I became invisible and ignored.

Bree is also damaged, but as her friend points out, in a very different way to Archer. As she begins to heal she gives Archer the opportunity to follow suit. She's never patronising or overbearing. Bree feels compassion for Archer, but doesn't ever pity him - I freaking loved them together!

Archer's Voice adds an interesting twist to the contemporary romance genre. It's told with such care and compassion that I was hooked from the start. Their story isn't all doom and gloom, because the romance is super hot and Archer has gotta be the dream boyfriend. I loved his naivety and found his learning curve really endearing.

I abso-freaking-lutely LOVED this book! I laughed, cried, shouted, cried some more, swooned and totally adored every page!! I don't often give 5 Stars because I find reasons to not to. I get picky over the grammar, dialogue or unrealistic plot devises, but with Archer's Voice I really didn't notice anything but the heartbreakingly devastating and really different story! I cannot recommend this book enough and I wish I could read it again for the first time!

5 EPIC Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:

  • "I was already brilliant. I just needed some world experience. I needed Thor."
  • "I want to be able to love you more than I fear losing you, and I don't know how. Teach me, Bree."
  • Sometimes an understanding silence was better than a bunch of meaningless words.
  • How do you teach a man who has lost everything, not to fear it happening again?

Review - This Raging Light

THIS RAGING LIGHT
by Estelle Laure

Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

Can the best thing happen at the worst time?

Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she’s about to experience
when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend’s brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure’s soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: **Note** This Raging Light covers some pretty dark/upsetting topics which some readers may find distressing.

Lucille's family has broken down and she's left with he responsibility of looking after her little sister Wren. I'm not going to delve too much into Lucille's family situation or her back story for fear of spoiling anything. I did find myself irrationally angry with her Mother. I kept wondering who does that? I particularly loved Wren, as far as little sisters go, she's super cute.

For the most part, Lucille handles everything really well. She displays remarkable strength of character. I really wasn't sure about the secrets and how she handled things with Digby. Digby for his part was extremely supportive of Lucille's situation, but at the same time he did seem incapable of making a decision (he share the blame with Lucille for this one too) and he does some questionable things.

Without giving anything away: I feel as though there are still a few questions left to answer because I couldn't 100 percent tell you exactly how everything ends. Is this a bad thing? Well no, not necessarily, but in this case it left me feeling a little unsettled.

I liked Laure's writing style because she approached the tricky subjects with sensitivity. I did find it difficult to warm to Lucille and wasn't totally convinced by the romance. Did I like the story? Yes, but I would have like a more developed ending.

3 Stars in my Sky!

Make Me Sin - Tour & Review

Make Me Sin - Bad Habit #2by J.T. Geissinger

Geissinger-MakeMeSin-19399-CV-FT-V3 (1)

Chloe Carmichael’s life feels pretty sweet—she’s both maid of honor and florist for her best friend’s A-list wedding, things are getting serious with her boyfriend, and her flower shop is about to get a spread in a national magazine. But it all quickly turns sour whenever the best man, Bad Habit drummer A.J. Edwards, shows his face…his handsome, unforgettable face. A.J. is everything Chloe doesn’t want: tattooed, selfish, and all-around bad news. So why can’t she stop thinking about him?

Goody two-shoes Chloe isn’t exactly A.J.’s type, either, but the chemistry between them is undeniable. A.J. will be the first to say he isn’t a saint, but there’s something he’s not saying—something that would devastate Chloe. The only way he can protect her is to push her away, but the drummer finds he needs her now more than ever. When a wedding-day confrontation reveals secrets they’re both hiding, will Chloe and A.J. ever find their rhythm again?

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: Oh the drama! I haven't read the first Bad Habit book, but Make Me Sin works as a standalone. The action in this instalment focuses on florist Chloe and superstar 'Bad Habit' drummer A.J.

Chloe and A.J. famously don't get on, but for the sake of her best friend Kat's imminent wedding to Bad Habit rocker Nico, Chloe attempts to tolerate (or at least ignore) A.J's rudeness and try to get on with him. This is a hard task because of the overwhelming tension between the two and A.J's general asshatness (in my head it's a word).

A.J. is FAR MORE complicated than I could ever have expected. I would never have predicted a fraction of the things he goes through (some of it more believable than others). I can't really discus any of this or the events of the story without giving too much away, but be prepared for some shockers!

I have to admit I kept hoping A.J would finally open up to Chloe and be honest with her. I wasn't always a fan of his choices but I did understand why he does certain things (mostly).

Make Me Sin is pretty heavy on the drama. So if angst really isn't your thing, then be prepared to stress. BUT fear not, it isn't all pain and drama, because Geissinger includes some really sweet touches, plus of course some pretty smutty moments.

I can't quite decide how I feel about Chloe, because sometimes I found her entertaining, but then she'd do something really infuriating and I'd find myself getting really annoyed at her.

I enjoyed their drama filled story and found myself rooting for a HEA...

Tour & Review - The Baller

The Baller

by Vi Keeland

Meet Brody Easton in THE BALLER!
A standalone Contemporary Romance novel by
New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author Vi Keeland

NOW AVAILABLE

Add to Goodreads

From New York Times and USA Today Bestseller, Vi Keeland, comes a sexy new novel.

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.
It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.
The famed quarterback decided to bare all.
And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.
No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.
The Super Bowl MVP quickly adopted a new hobby—screwing with me.
When I pushed back, he shifted from wanting to screw with me, to wanting to screw me.
But I don’t date players.
And it’s not because I’m one of the few women working in the world of professional football.
I’d date an athlete.
It’s the other kind of player I don’t date.
You know the type. Good looking, strong, cocky, always looking to get laid.

Brody Easton was the ultimate player.
Every woman wanted to be the one to change him.
But the truth was, all he needed was a girl worth changing for.
Turned out, I was that girl.
Simple right?
Let’s face it. It never is.
There’s a story between once upon a time and happily ever after…
And this one is ours.

What I say: I'm going to start out by saying how funny The Baller is. I really wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did. Alongside the naughty scenes, banter and arguing, Delilah's and Brody's antics had me in hysterics - the towel scene is a personal favourite.

The chemistry between the main characters and the sports theme reminded me of Pucked, but don't worry it's not the same story.

Brody Easton aka 'Mr superstar football player (American footie not soccer), MVP (thanks to years of watching the SuperBowl I actually known what this is), advertisers dream, all round hottie and heartbreaker'. BUT he has far more to him than just his reputation. When he meets beautiful sports presenter/anchor Delilah Maddox and she ignores his flirtations, he makes it his mission to charm her, by irritating her as much as possible.

I loved the banter and heat between them and was surprised Delilah managed to resist him. There are lots of naughty scenes, some packing the heat, whilst others are really sweet - expect to blush lovelies!

Yes the banter and sexy times, help demonstrate their chemistry, but it was actually the back-stories and emotional scars, which kept me invested in their story. As the plot develops it becomes clear they're both damaged and facing their own share of problems. The split POVs really helped get a feel for them both - fame and money clearly isn't everything.

I'd love to read about some of Brody's teammates or perhaps Delilah's bestie...?!

Excerpt:

A new song had just started, and I was enjoying his company when a voice behind me said, “Can I cut in?”
My head whipped around, even though I had no doubt whom the gravelly voice belonged to.
Michael was gracious. “I hate to share. But I suppose I have been hogging the most beautiful woman at the event.” He let go of my hand and stepped back with a gentlemanly nod. “Thank you for the dance, Delilah.”
Again Brody Easton had caught me off guard. Before I knew it, I was dancing with the arrogant jerk.  He wrapped his arms around me and pulled my body tight against his. Way tighter than Michael had held me.
“Good to see you again, Lois Lane.”
The man had balls; I had to give him that. I looked him straight in the eyes. “Nice to see you with clothes on, Easton.”
“Do you prefer me without?”
“I prefer you on the other side of the room.”
He chuckled. It was a hearty laugh. “That’s what happens sometimes when you decide you want to hang out in the men’s locker room.”
I tried to pull back, but he tightened his grip and held me in place. I craned my neck. “Let go of me.”
“No.”
“No?”
“That’s right. No.”
“I can scream at the top of my lungs.”
“I’d like to hear you scream.” His tone made it clear he meant he wanted me underneath him while I was doing the screaming.
“You’re an asshole. You know that?”
“I do. You asked me that yesterday. For a reporter, you should really try changing up your questions more frequently.”
My eyes bulged.
Easton shifted his hand down to the small of my back before twirling us around the dance floor. Figures the prick can dance.
“Are you seeing anyone?”
“You can’t be serious?”
He ignored my comment. “Would you like to have dinner tonight?”
“We just ate.”
“Dessert at my place, then?”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Did you hit your head at the game yesterday?”
“On a diet, huh?”
“Yeah. That’s it. I don’t want to go to your place for dessert because I’m on a diet.”
“Well, that’s just a shame.”

Review - Bookishly Ever After

Bookishly Ever After
by Isabel Bandeira

What they say: In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary. But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?

What I say: Bookishly Ever After was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I was initially drawn to the synopsis - you've gotta love a bookworm, right? Well kinda, sorta, sometimes...

Phoebe/Feebs is more comfortable with her favourite book boyfriends than real life interaction with guys. I can absolutely understand this and I did really enjoy the snippets from her favourite books, but I did find it hard to connect with her. I've read several books that follow a 'story with a story' style trope and I did like the parts were when she drew upon book experiences to help her deal with real life situations. BUT it was though a little difficult at times to work out whether Phoebe was being herself or another character.

The awkward flirting and secret crushes did make me smile but I wanted to know more about Phoebe. I liked the secondary characters and Em made me smile. Her constant boy dramas reminded me of one of my friends when we were teens.

I have to admit the drama with Dev took a long time to develop and I did find my mind wandering along the way. It took a long time for anything to happen, but I did like Dev and wanted them to move past the friend zone. I enjoyed Phoebe's awkwardness Phoebe when thinking about Dev, but the pacing just seemed a little slow at times.

I'm aware I'm sounding a little negative but this really isn't how I felt about the entire book because I did enjoy Phoebe's story. Her awkward antics made me laugh. Overall I liked the story, I just didn't love it.
