Excerpt:

She stood there for a minute, watching the view as though she wanted to imprint every detail in her memory. He couldn’t see her face but wondered what she was thinking. Did she miss the States? Was she wondering how anyone could live in such a desolate place? Or was she in awe? He hoped the latter. A ray of sunshine broke through the clouds, shooting straight across the mountain—Beinn Tomaidh, as it was called—into the Loch Darroch, from which the town had gotten its name. The light reflected in the water and made it shimmer green and gold. Then, the clouds closed in on themselves again, and the loch grew dark, an unblinking black eye by the foot of the mountain.

“I understand now.”

He blinked, drawn from his thoughts by the sound of Daisy’s voice. She turned around to face him. With her face aglow, her eyes shimmering and her soft colors, he was struck by the sudden notion that there was something in the room whose beauty competed with that of the view.

“This is Scotland. This, right here. Its soul. Does that sound cheesy?”

He cleared his throat. “Not at all.”

“I understand why people would come here. All year-round. We must make sure they know it exists.” She chewed her lip and sent the view another glance. “How bad is it?”

“Pardon me?”

Her brows furrowed with impatience. “I’ve already understood your financial situation is bad. But how bad? How long do you have before you have to close down?”

Darkness. It lowered itself over his senses as quickly as the disappearing ray of light over the loch. Suddenly, it became hard to breathe, and the sudden panic made him take a step back.

“I think we’re done here,” he said. He didn’t quite recognize his own voice. It was as though someone was talking through him—and that person’s voice was both deeper and rougher.

Blindly, his airways tightening, he made his way to the door and headed downstairs, without taking care to see if she followed.

photo Heart Full of Stars Author Linda Govik_zpsbztja2ny.jpg

Linda Govik is Swedish, born and bred. She grew up in what could be described as a ghetto to Gothenburg, but survived it fairly unscathed (in those days, bomb threats to the school meant a day off, and wasn't really a big thing), and when she met her husband, they moved further up north to a small coastal town, where she now resides, a stone's throw from the sea.

Cats, coffee and exercise is what sustains her (but unfortunately so does food, which is why the effects of all this exercise still doesn't make her look like Tinkerbell... but she's also (fortunately) old enough not to care), and, needless to say, she also loves writing. And reading, any genre.

Whatcha Reading Wednesday - Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

I'm FINALLY reading this one!

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
by Gail Honeyman

What they say: No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

What I say: The Rules series is a cute YA series with a bit of an edge. Mike has gone through a rapid transformation since we first met her in Cally's story in The Slope Rules. She's moved on from her former mean girl persona and toxic frenemy relationship with her former bestie. This time her story takes centerstage.

The Trail Rules is very much a coming of age story. Mike is just beginning to learn who she is and what she likes or dislikes. She finds herself surprising into biking. Suddenly a whole new world of possibilities is open to her. I'm not a big mountain biker. To be honest snowboarding is much more my speed, but I enjoyed learning about the trails and mountains from Mike's POV.

The characters are young but where I often find this 'youngness' immature and annoying, I appreciated the changes the characters go through. I particularly appreciated how Mike is self-aware enough to make positive changes, try to be a better person. I'm not saying all YA leads need to go through such a dramatic shift but it was really refreshing to see a young woman take the harder path to self improvement.

I wasn't expecting a couple of the plot shifts. I almost, and I do mean almost, felt sorry for certain characters at times. No spoilers...!

The romance. Once I got my head around the slightly confusing name situation (it honestly doesn't take much to confuse me these days) I really liked Mica. Unlike other guys, Mica brings out the best in Mike. They complement each other. I liked the slow burn and their friendship. In fact it was nice meeting all the bikers and I enjoyed this fun story.

THE REAL THING
by Melissa Foster

Fall in love on the shores of Sugar Lake in the small town of Sweetwater with Willow Dalton and Zane Walker.

This sassy, spirited baker is fine with heat—but is her fake fiancé too hot to handle?

Bakery owner Willow Dalton’s friendship with Zane Walker has always been a bit complicated. Now a scrumptiously hot A-list actor, Zane’s always had a reputation as a player. He’s arrogant, and he’s definitely not boyfriend material. Sure, he did Willow a favor by agreeing to take her virginity before college, but is that reason enough for her to go along with a fake engagement a decade later—even if it comes with a real diamond ring?

Zane should have known better. Nothing involving Willow has ever been easy. Still, he knows her better than anyone, and becoming America’s hottest new leading man means cleaning up his reputation. An “engagement” to curvy, sass-mouthed Willow is the perfect PR move…provided no one gets hurt.

Now Zane and Willow’s little white lie has turned into an irresistible recipe for sweet temptation. And soon no one will be able to tell the difference between their fake engagement and the real thing—including them.

What I say: I'm not usually one for cutesy romances but I do find something particularly intriguing about a forbidden romance. This is exactly what we get in The Real Thing with Willow and Zane. I was happy to be shown how cute can also be dramatic and entertaining...

Willow and Zane have history. Lots of it. Zane is Willow's older brother's lifelong best friend. Zane has always been considered part of the Dalton family and he wouldn't want to hurt her or upset his surrogate family. They've had a bit of an unusual relationship since she convinced him to take her virginity years ago.

Zane is now a big time movie star but his reputation has taken a bit of a battering recently. If he's going to keep getting huge movie roles he needs to find a way to win over directors and the press. What he needs is a wholesome image and a serious relationship. Who better to help but Willow as he did help her out all those years ago? Zane somehow convinces Willow to play the part of his fake fiancee - genius plan, right?

The banter. The Real Thing has all the banter. I loved the constant back-and-forth between the two. They have an intense sort of frenemy slash could be lovers kinda chemistry vibe going on.

I have to admit I wasn't initially on board with the speed of how things progressed; they seemed to operate at warp speed at times, but this is largely due to their shared history, and, I hate to say it but the genre of the book.

Back to the cute. I have to admit Melissa Foster did manage to win me over with this sweet story. I liked learning more about their past and seeing them struggle with the future.

What I say: Oh the sweet heart warming drama!

Jolie's and Corbin’s story in Turn the Page is short and really flipping cute

Corbin has followed the route of many former talent show winners by going from overnight fame and fortune, to musical obscurity and ruin. Corbin who has lost everything to drugs and booze finds himself returning to his hometown as the ultimate prodigal son.

Jolie is cute - with elements of Miss Honey mixed with modern quirky bookshop owner and filled with extreme stubbornness. I liked her and wanted to go hang out in her shop. Also how cute are the twins?

It took me a while to warm to Corbin because his turnaround seemed pretty quick but I really liked the idea of them together - their differences seemed to balance each other out.

I would have loved to see a more developed ending to this sweet story but liked how Sydney Logan handled their romance and made them work towards following their ambitions.

Exclusive Excerpt:

It felt good to be writing songs again—even if he was the only one who might ever hear them.

Well, he and Jolie.

When Corbin let it slip that he’d been writing, Jolie begged him to bring his guitar to the river the next afternoon.

“The fall leaves are beautiful,” Corbin said, gazing at the mountains in the distance.

“They are. And you’re stalling.”

He couldn’t deny it. Corbin had never been one to be nervous about sharing new songs, but for some reason, this seemed different. Important. Meaningful. Maybe because the inspiration for these songs was sitting right in front of him, with her long hair in a braid and her green eyes bright with excitement as she eagerly awaited whatever he was about to play for her.

But that wasn’t the only reason he was nervous.

“I have a confession to make, Jolie.”

She crossed her legs in front of her. “Okay.”

“These songs . . . they’re the most I’ve ever written . . . while sober.”

Jolie nodded in understanding.

“I mean, there’s a very good chance they’ll suck. I just want you to be prepared. And I want you to be honest if they are.”

“They won’t suck.”

“How do you know?”

“Because they won’t.”

Corbin sighed heavily and pulled his guitar out of its case. Her faith unnerved him, maybe because he was used to letting everyone down. The very last thing he ever wanted to do was disappoint her.

Jolie must’ve sensed his anxiety, because before he placed his fingers on the strings, she gently reached for his hand.

“Don’t be nervous. It’s just me.”

Corbin smiled and squeezed her hand. She had no way of knowing it, but these days, it was her opinion that mattered most.

Taking a deep breath, he attached the capo to the neck of the guitar and strummed a few strings to make sure it was in tune.

Then he started to sing.

One song effortlessly flowed into the next, with Corbin’s soft tenor voice echoing across the water. He kept his eyes closed or on his guitar the entire time, too afraid to see Jolie’s reaction to the music. It was only when he played the final note in his last song that he finally allowed himself a glance at the beautiful woman sitting in front of him.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“I know they’re rough,” he said, his voice shaking slightly as he placed his guitar back in the case. “I’m still struggling with the bridge in that last one. My fault, since I wrote it that way. I was thinking maybe I should cut it out completely or—”

“Corbin—”

“And in the first song . . . the chorus needs some work. I’m thinking maybe trying it in a different key or something. I don’t know.”

“Corbin James, shut up and listen to me.”

He took a steadying breath and gazed at her.

“I loved them,” she said softly.

“Yeah?”

“Every single word. Every single note.”

Corbin lifted his hand and trailed his fingers along her cheek, wiping her tears away. He heard her breath hitch in her throat as he leaned closer. He knew it was risky. Kissing her could ruin everything before it even had the chance to turn into something . . . something that might be incredible and wonderful and life changing.

It was a chance he had to take.

Not kissing her simply wasn’t an option.

Not anymore.

Jolie’s eyes fluttered closed as he cupped her cheek, letting his nose glide against hers. With a quiet sigh, her lips parted in silent invitation, and he couldn’t help but smile when he felt her tremble against him.

“This could change everything,” Corbin whispered, kissing the hollow just below her ear.

“I hope so.”

Their arms wrapped around each other, and Corbin buried his face against her neck, inhaling deeply and drowning in her sweet scent. She moaned softly, and it was that moan that finally broke him.

Corbin had every intention of kissing her gently, but her moan, combined with her hands pulling him impossibly closer, sent his body into overdrive, and they both groaned when his mouth hungrily captured hers. Frantic and sweet. Frenzied and tender. With quiet sighs and gentle whispers and warm arms that held each other tight, they laid back against the autumn grass and kissed until the sun disappeared behind the mountains.

The Keeper of Lost Things - Review

The Keeper of Lost Things
by Ruth Hogan

What they say: A charming, clever, and quietly moving debut novel of of endless possibilities and joyful discoveries that explores the promises we make and break, losing and finding ourselves, the objects that hold magic and meaning for our lives, and the surprising connections that bind us.

Lime green plastic flower-shaped hair bobbles—Found, on the playing field, Derrywood Park, 2nd September.

Bone china cup and saucer—Found, on a bench in Riveria Public Gardens, 31st October.

Anthony Peardew is the keeper of lost things. Forty years ago, he carelessly lost a keepsake from his beloved fiancée, Therese. That very same day, she died unexpectedly. Brokenhearted, Anthony sought consolation in rescuing lost objects—the things others have dropped, misplaced, or accidentally left behind—and writing stories about them. Now, in the twilight of his life, Anthony worries that he has not fully discharged his duty to reconcile all the lost things with their owners. As the end nears, he bequeaths his secret life’s mission to his unsuspecting assistant, Laura, leaving her his house and and all its lost treasures, including an irritable ghost.

Recovering from a bad divorce, Laura, in some ways, is one of Anthony’s lost things. But when the lonely woman moves into his mansion, her life begins to change. She finds a new friend in the neighbor’s quirky daughter, Sunshine, and a welcome distraction in Freddy, the rugged gardener. As the dark cloud engulfing her lifts, Laura, accompanied by her new companions, sets out to realize Anthony’s last wish: reuniting his cherished lost objects with their owners.

Long ago, Eunice found a trinket on the London pavement and kept it through the years. Now, with her own end drawing near, she has lost something precious—a tragic twist of fate that forces her to break a promise she once made.

As the Keeper of Lost Objects, Laura holds the key to Anthony and Eunice’s redemption. But can she unlock the past and make the connections that will lay their spirits to rest?

Full of character, wit, and wisdom, The Keeper of Lost Things is heartwarming tale that will enchant fans of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Garden Spells, Mrs Queen Takes the Train, and The Silver Linings Playbook.

What I say: The Keeper of Lost Things is refreshingly charming, honest and sweet. It's pretty different to most of the other books I've read recently. Instead of angst ridden drama or YA fantasy, Ruth Hogan's story is playful and quaint - the definition of whimsy.

As I Brit it's always fun to come across an interesting story set in England. In The Keeper of Lost Things we're treated to several stories, set in many places. Although it's far more than just two character's stories. I loved how the many plots are seamlessly worked together into one book.

I love the idea of finding long lost objects and returning them to their former owners. Anthony deals with his heartbreak by returning lost items and writing marvellous stories about them. Laura finds herself taking over Anthony's mission and creating a new life for herself in the process.

Sunshine never failed to bring a smile to my face, and I enjoyed the funnier moments with Freddy.

The supernatural, ghostly elements added even more whimsy - I kept hoping we'd discover more clues about Eunice.
