What they say: Danger, betrayal, and enticing forbidden love clash in book three of #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Harbinger trilogy!

When Angels Fall

Trinity Marrow has lost the battle and her beloved Protector. Even with both demons and Wardens on her side, Trin may not win the war against the Harbinger.

Bringing Lucifer back to the world to fight the Harbinger is probably a really, really bad idea, but they’re out of options—and the world’s ultimate fallen angel is the only being powerful enough to impact the outcome.

As Trin and Zayne form a new and more dangerous bond and Lucifer unleashes Hell on earth, the apocalypse looms and the world teeters on the end of forever. Win or lose, one thing is certain—nothing will ever be the same.

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

What they say: Dangerous secrets and forbidden desires lead to shocking consequences… Don’t miss book two of the fantastical Harbinger trilogy from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Half-angel Trinity and her bonded gargoyle protector, Zayne, have been working with demons to stop the apocalypse while avoiding falling in love. The Harbinger is coming…but who or what is it? All of humankind may fall if Trinity and Zayne can’t win the race against time as dark forces gather.

As tensions rise, they must stay close together and patrol the DC streets at night, seeking signs of the Harbinger, an entity that is killing Wardens and demons with no seeming rhyme or reason. Forbidden to be with each other, Zayne and Trinity fight their feelings and turn to unusual sources for help—the demon Roth and his cohorts. But as deaths pile up and they uncover a sinister plot involving the local high school and endangering someone dear to Zayne, Trin realizes she is being led…herded…played for some unknown end. I received a copy from the publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange fro an honest review!

What I say: The best way for me to describe the book is as a kind of Supernatural, Buffy & Charmed mash up with a quirky mythological YA paranormal fantasy twist. Yep sorry that doesn't really help.

I have to admit I was expecting to find Diana annoying, and although I did experience a few eye-rolling moments, I liked her. I found how she went from smiling at a cute boy, to fighting against evil, and then back again all without getting whiplash highly amusing - which often annoys me in books.

The pacing of the story is pretty speedy - We meet Diana as she's travelling to her new home in Edinburgh, then not long afterwards the big bad has appeared. With a Dad who reminded me of Giles from Buffy, she adapts pretty well to the sudden turn of events and drama.

At first I wasn't 100% sure what to make of Minerva and Vesta, but they definitely grew on me. I really liked the sweet bond between the girls. The same goes for Sebastian who I really didn't like at first, but he won me over. Alex was definitely a conundrum (don't worry no spoilers) and I have high hopes for what happens next.

The classics geek in me loved the history behind their names,  plus the utilisation of well known myths alongside local legends. Come on what happens next...?

YA December Review - Demon Kissed

#YA December - From the Archives review

Demon Kissed
by H.M. Ward

What they say: The Valefar boy tricked Ivy Taylor into kissing him, but he took much more than a kiss - he stole her soul and left her within inches of death. By surviving, Ivy is drawn into the conflict between the Martis and the Valefar. The war between these two immortal forces has raged for millennia without distraction. Until now.

Ivy is an anomaly-she is the only person who has ever walked away from a demon kiss alive. Her survival gives her unique and deadly abilities. Too powerful to ignore, Ivy is a threat to both armies. These two ancient enemies will stop at nothing to kill the seventeen-year-old.

Surviving is nothing new for headstrong Ivy, but her survival has never depended on another person before. This time it does. And if she misplaces her trust, she's dead. To her horror, she starts falling in love at the worst possible time-with the enemy. He appears to be protecting her. But she can't be certain if he is trying to help her, or help himself to her power. For Ivy, trusting the right person is the difference between love and survival, or a deadly demon kiss.

What I say: Demon Kissed is the first book in H.M. Ward's series focusing on the war between Martis (good guys with Angel blood) and the Valefar (soulless baddies who have demon blood). After Ivy is attacked by her sort-of-boyfriend Jake (a Valefar), she finds out about the existence of these immortal creatures and her place in their world. Ivy is a Martis (sort of) who has a unique set of powers and a terrifying destiny.

Poor Ivy is having one hell of a time of it in this book. Her sister is dead, her best friend Collin is being weird, Jake tried to take her soul, and almost everyone around her seems to have an agenda. To top it off she is struggling to deal with her sisters death and is forced into an eternal battle between creatures she didn't know existed.

I did find Ivy a bit sulky and irritating at first, but she definitely grew on me as the book progressed. A couple of the characters reminded me of those from Abbi Glines's Existence series (I had Nicole pegged from the start, she was very similar to Leif's cheerleader girlfriend in Existence).

I really wanted to know what Eric was going to reveal to Ivy and if Julia has an agenda; she seemed really shifty to me! I liked Collin and felt really sorry for him, but I couldn't completely trust his motives because he kept so many secrets from Ivy.

I have to admit that I initially started reading Demon Kissed because of the pretty cover and it being on sale on Amazon, but I'm glad I read it and that I stuck with it. Demon Kissed definitely gets better as it goes along and the dramatic tension increases as Ward introduces more action and many twists. I'm looking forward to discovering where Ward takes this series.

3.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:
  • Stupidly, I thought he seemed like a sweet guy, who cared about me. That made the blindsiding attack that bitch-slapped me much worse.
  • "I do lust after you in every way possible. I just can't have you in any way possible. It royally blows."
  • At this point my only friends were a demon kissed boy, and a nun.

I really love this cover!

Demon Road - Review

Demon Road #1
by Derek Landy

What they say: Full of Landy’s trademark wit, action and razor sharp dialogue, DEMON ROAD kicks off with a shocking opener and never lets up the pace in an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial killers: they’re all here. And the demons? Well, that’s where Amber comes in...Sixteen years old, smart and spirited, she’s just a normal American teenager until the lies are torn away and the demons reveal themselves.

Forced to go on the run, she hurtles from one threat to another, revealing a tapestry of terror woven into the very fabric of her life. Her only chance rests with her fellow travellers, who are not at all what they appear to be…

What I say: I'm going to try to keep this review from being a Skulduggery Pleasant comparison, but I will point out that Demon Road could only have been written by Derek Landy. It's full of sass, humour, drama, action and fab one-liners.

Onto the book itself: What I particularly appreciated was the lack of a long drawn out introduction. Although I am a fan of description, I felt as though the story didn't need too much detail before getting to grips with Amber's story - we get it along the way. Most people get a party for for their sixteenth birthday, but Amber gets a shock. She discovers that she's actually a demon and her parents want to EAT HER! The narrative follows Amber as she goes on the run with her protector Milo.

I liked Amber and definitely found her entertaining. I laughed at her 'shifting' issues. Milo reminded me of a certain Skulduggery and I'd like to see more of him. I wasn't the biggest fan of Glen. I initially found him annoying and he often confused me. I did soften towards him at times but he didn't completely win me over. Amber's parents were far more entertaining than I had expected.

There is a lot of action, fighting and dark humour. Certain parts may be a bit of a shock for younger readers but I liked the fights and slightly grim topics.

I decided to read Demon Road because I love the Skulduggery Pleasant series and also because I read a sampler chapter at YALC earlier this year. Along with the sampler chapter, I also received a Demon Road map and other goodies which definitely helped visualise their journey - But you honestly don't need it to get engrossed in Amber's world. I enjoyed the story and laughed along at their antics.

White Hot Kiss - New Cover

WHITE HOT KISS synopsis:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining the balance between good and evil. He was her everything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…

Ahh! I just realised that I hadn't posted this review (which I wrote in October)!!

What I say: I'm a BIG fan of JLA's writing style (she does snarkasm REALLY well) and I loved Stone Cold Touch. In case you haven't read any of The Dark Elements series... Layla is half Warden (gargoyle) and half Demon. She lives with a Warden clan and has been in love with Zayne for years. Her demon side means she can steal souls with a kiss. Layla's life dramatically alters when she meets Roth, a super hot and bad ass demon Prince. After the dramatic ending to White Hot Kiss I've been impatiently waiting to find out what happened to Roth and how Layla would cope with recent revelations!

The story starts not long after the end of WHK and Layla is struggling to cope with what happened to Roth and the big secrets that had been kept from her. Not only does she miss Roth but she's having issues with her abilities. Throw in the continued secret keeping Wardens and Zayne acting weird and Layla has herself one hell of a situation.

I love Roth in WHK and although there were many times when I wanted to smack him in SCT, I think I ended up loving him even more. He's actually really sweet at times! Now here comes the problem...I also really liked Zayne, which I was not expecting. It was obvious how much he cared for Layla but he actually begins to open up and step up a lot more this time. But I did have a problem with a few of his actions and the fact he withheld certain things.

I'm really looking forward to the conclusion to the series and to see which guy won the vote (JLA had an online vote where readers got to decide who Layla ends up with). I think you can probably tell from the button on my sidebar which team I'm on!!

EXCERPT:

I’d remained in bed after that, trying to sort through the odd tingling in my chest. There was a slight smile on my lips, because Zayne…well, he’d made my day, but then I’d remember what Roth had said to me the night before and the smile would wash away as if it had never been there.

I probably needed to get used to the whiplash mood swings.

It wasn’t until after dinner that I decided to scrub a day’s worth of gunk off myself. Gingerly, I peeled the bandage off, happy to find that the cut in my arm was healing as expected. I didn’t need to cover it anymore. The arm was still tender, but the Warden blood in me was quickly undoing the damage from the iron.

After changing into fresh pj’s, like a total hermit, I padded over to my desk, where I’d left my cell phone. It had been on silent all day and when I tapped the screen, I wasn’t surprised to see a slew of texts from Stacey.

Where r u?

R u skipping, u ho?

A minute later: Your locker misses u. Guess u sick with the herp?

Oh my God. I laughed out loud, grinning as I thumbed through her texts. Our bio sub is still hot. U r missing this.

Bio is lonely.

My boobs miss u. How weird is that?

That was notably weird and yet not surprising.

If I get my cell taken from me, it’s ur fault.

Holy shit, Layla, where r u?!?

Air punched out of my lungs as I read the next text and the several following them.

U have no idea who just walked into bio!!!

Roth is here!

Holy Canola oil, why aren’t u here to witness this?

Ok. He says he had mono. Srlsy? Do people still get mono? And who in the duck was he kissing? A second later—Duck? I didn’t mean duck. That’s SO not what I meant, autocorrect.

Another text had come in about fifteen minutes after the last one. He asked where u were. I told him u joined a cult. I laughed. He didn’t.

Finally, the last text was to call her if I wasn’t dead.

“What in the Hell?” I tossed my cell onto the bed, mouth hanging open.
