What they say: Smith Hamilton has it all—he's smart, good-looking and loaded. But he remembers a time when he had nothing and no one, so he's not about to mess up, especially with his best friend’s little sister. That means keeping Evie at arm's length … even though the once pesky little girl is now a buxom bombshell. A sexy blonde who pushes his self-control to the limit the night she crawls into bed with him.

Evie Reed knows she's blessed—with an exclusive education, a family who loves her, and a new job managing social media for her family's lingerie company. But she wants more, like a reason to wear the sexy lingerie herself. She has just the man in mind to help with that. She's crushed on Smith forever. Surely tricking her way into his bed will force him to see her in a new, adult way.

Except that when Evie's plan leads to disaster, she and Smith must decide—ignore the attraction sizzling between them, or become play mates and risk it all.

The End of Oz - Dorothy Must Die #4
by Danielle Paige

I really enjoyed this previous books in the series and am looking forward to seeing what happens next...

What they say: In this high-octane fourth book in the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die series, Amy Gumm must do everything in her power to save Kansas and make Oz a free land once more.

At the end of Yellow Brick War, Amy had finally defeated Dorothy. Just when she and the rest of the surviving members of the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked thought it was safe to start rebuilding the damaged land of Oz, they realized they’ve been betrayed—by one of their own. And Dorothy might not have been so easily defeated after all.

In the fourth installment of the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die series, the magical Road of Yellow Brick has come to the rescue, and whisked Amy away—but to where? Does the Road itself know where she needs to go to find the help that she needs?

Welcome to the other side of the rainbow. Here there’s danger around every corner, and magic shoes won’t be able to save you.

Blast from the Past Review - White Hot Kiss

I'm reliving the awesomeness that is Layla, Roth and Zayne by rereading White Hot Kiss.

The Dark Elements #1 by Jennifer L. Armentrout (you can read my review of the prequel novella Bitter Sweet Love #0.5 here).

What they say: One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

What I say: It seems like I've been waiting ages for the release of White Hot Kiss. But once I finished moaning about the later UK release date and it had appeared on my kindle I realised it was as good, if not better than expected and defo worth the wait!

It's no secret I'm a big fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout/J. Lynn and all her books, but I wasn't entirely sure I'd ever like gargoyles (Wardens) and demons as much as I do her aliens, demi-gods and smoking hot contemporary heroes. BUT was completely won over and I loved the concept and her new characters!

With a JLA book you know you're always going to get a good mix of fab characters, tricky themes and awesome banter. In White Hot Kiss JLA has managed to merge the paranormal aspects (demons & gargoyles) with your usual teenage emotional dramas. She introduced her new world of Wardens and demons in Bitter Sweet Love but it was in White Hot Kiss where she gets down to the real nitty-gritty! I hadn't really though much about gargoyles other than in the Beauty and the Beast Disney movie until now but I loved the lore JLA created.

Layla is a half-warden, half-demon who attends school with her human friends. Her nature means she craves souls and can't even kiss anybody without risking their soul. This is never good when you're in love with your Warden bestie Zayne. Her demon side makes her something of a strange entity in the gargoyle Warden world. She's sort of subservient to the Wardens and hasn't really thought to challenge how things are until demon Roth comes along.

I'm sure we're supposed to like Zayne as he's the hottie she can never have. Layla can't risk Zayne's soul, she doesn't think he likes her as more than a friend & he's supposed to be with Danica (Jasmine's younger sister from Bitter Sweet Love). It seemed obvious to me that he's into Layla in far more than a friendly, older brother kinda way. I'm guessing Zayne will appear more in Stone Cold Touch, because although Layla loves him and he takes care of her, he did come across as slightly condescending at times, but then I suppose they are both in a difficult situation!

Now onto Roth (aka the guy JLA based Daemon Black on), he's an uber sexy demon. The thing I loved most about him was his always-on-point sarcasm - the dude had some great one-liners! The thing with Roth is, although he has a lot of secrets and is a demon (i.e. never trust a demon because they manipulate and lie), he's always pretty upfront about what (or who) he wants and seems to genuinely care for Layla. Roth makes her feel alive and attractive for the first time in her life. As the book progresses she is very rightly confused and torn over her feelings for the two guys. As far as love triangles go, they normally annoy the hell out of me, but in this case I have no idea what's going to happen or who is better for her.

Be warned there is a cliffy!! But rather than being annoyed, it left me excited and feeling kinda upbeat for the release of Stone Cold Touch (see the cover reveal here) so good work JLA!!

So do you think demons and gargoyles are the new (Daemon) black?!

4.5 Well deserved Stars in my Sky!

Exclusive Excerpt:

I let go of the phone and press the heels of my hands against my temples. Anxiety is a bitch, and I better pull it together before I turn into the witch version of Holden Caulfield. Not that I have anything against the too smart, self-aware protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye, but I firmly believe teen angst should have an expiration date.

I look at the digital clock on my nightstand, and my stomach dips a bit. In a little more than an hour, I’m supposed to sit in Penrose’s lecture. DeLuca will be there too, asking questions like, “Why did you whisper some dude’s name while I had you pinned against the closet?” Good times.

Can’t avoid the inevitable.

Gathering the last bits of energy buzzing through my numb body, I get up and stumble to the bathroom. I climb in the shower.

Dipping my head back, I embrace the hot water pouring down my lethargic skin, but every time I close my eyes, I shiver. The blood, the torn flesh, and the fiery eyes haunt me.

I turn the faucet, increasing the temperature from hot to I’m-gonna-end-up-in-the-ER-with-second- degree-burns.

Why does shit like this keep happening to me? Did I not pay my karmic dues when I helped Alex save Jesse and those kids? Don’t I deserve a freakin’ breather? Some plus points on the cosmic scale?

I rest my head against the shower wall, hoping the heat will burn away all the shit that’s bothering me. It doesn’t. Nothing can wash away the void this premonition has left inside me.

The hot spray smears the makeup from last night. The scent of my jasmine perfume is replaced by the harsh smell of sandalwood soap. Hell, how I wish everything else would go away as easily. It won’t. Yeah, and I gotta stop pretending it will.

By the time I wrap my hair in a towel and slap on a little makeup, I’m certain of three things: I need to get rid of DeLuca before his I’m-a-lovesick-obsessed- asshole act gets worse, my new life sucks, and I will call Alex, consequences be damned.

I just put on my panties and bra when loud banging against the front door startles me. Bonnie is still fast asleep, the Nun has a key, and I’m not expecting any visitors. I step into loose jeans, pull a sweater over my head, and walk out of the bathroom.

One thing’s for sure; whoever is knocking doesn’t know a thing about patience. The door vibrates, and if I didn’t know better, I’d say someone’s trying to break it down.

“Jesus freakin’ Christ, I’m coming.” I yank the door open, ready to unload a shitload of anger, but when my brain processes what my eyes see, I can neither move nor talk.

Blood.

Bruises.

More blood.

Alex.

A M/M Contemporary Romance.

Left at the altar. Dumped. Abandoned. Jilted.

That only happened in books. Fictional disasters like the kind I wrote. It wasn’t supposed to happen to me, Sam Stone. My life was supposed to be orderly. Organized. Perfect.

But I had no control over my fiancé’s decision to leave me.

What better place to be alone while nursing my broken heart than in paradise, right? Two weeks of sandy beaches and tranquil waters to quietly rethink my life.

That's what I thought anyway—until Drew Mariano came along and shook everything up. He shook me up.

He made me forget myself. And that was good.

He made me want to take chances. And that was hard.

He made me feel high on life. And that was amazing.

But I was afraid…the higher I got…

the harder

I was going

to fall…

This is a contemporary romance for readers eighteen and over due to graphic language and sexual content.

Review - Street Soldier

Street Soldier
by Andy McNab

What they say: Sean Harker is good at two things: stealing cars and fighting. One earns him money, the other earns him respect from the gang that he calls family.

A police chase through the city streets is just another rite of passage for Sean . . . as is getting nicked. But a brutal event behind bars convinces him to take charge, and turn his life around.

Now he must put his street skills to the ultimate test: as a soldier in the British Army. And the battlefield is London, where innocent people are being targeted by a new and terrifying enemy.

Undercover, under threat – only Sean Harker can save the streets from all-out war.

I received a copy from the publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review!

What I say: *Full disclosure - I wrote this review a while ago and forgot to post it*

Due to the more adult themes and language used I'm going to label Street Soldier as mature YA.

Teenage gangs are a big problem in England. London definitely has a lot of gang related crime, so it wasn't difficult to imagine the scenarios Sean ends up in happening outside of the book. The story is about Sean's crimes and the long lasting consequences.

We see his life in the gang, in a young offenders institution and as a solider in the army. London is the war zone he always knew but that we may not have expected.

I loved the raw honesty and heartbreaking authenticity Andy McNab works into Sean's story but it was his daily struggle to turn his life around, to right his wrongs, to be a better version of himself which really won me over. He charmed me.

The concept is clever and terrifying in parts, yet hopeful and inspirational in others. The plot is engaging and original. The pace is dramatic and action filled.

4 Stars in my Sky!
