We walked all the way back to the manor instead of traveling by the much faster metal pathways. While he didn’t say as much, I understood that Micah wanted the extra time to clear his head, and I was content to while away the rest of the morning with him. “I’m still a bit… grumpy about being cheated out of our wedding night,” I muttered as we walked.

“Grumpy?” Micah repeated. We’d stopped beside a stream to relax and splash some cool water on our faces. “That is not quite the word I would have chosen.”

“Really?” I’d found a stubby branch, and was doodling in the mud while I sat on a rock, my back to the water. “And what word would you choose, General Silverstrand?”

“Hush. I have not filled that role for a long, long time.” He leaned over and nuzzled the soft spot behind my ear. “Lonely. Bereft. Frustrated. Unmarried.”

“Micah, it’s only been one night.”

“Yes, but until our marriage is consummated, we are not as one. The officiant said as much during our ritual.”

I recalled the actual words of the ceremony—at the time, I’d been too elated to dissect their meaning, but Corporal Rawson had said, “And once you know her as your wife, you are forever joined as one.” I hadn’t realized that that was what they meant, but I suppose it made sense. At least it was an easier requirement than babies.

“Are all marriages like that?” I asked. I felt Micah’s mouth curl into a smile.

“I don’t know. I have only been married once.” He nipped at my ear and added, “As for this marriage, I know that I must lie with you to seal our vows.”

“Well,” I murmured, stretching my neck for more kisses, “I guess we’d better get on that.”

“I agree.” Micah leaned forward to kiss me on the mouth, but he halted when he saw the result of my mud doodles. I had stabbed and slashed at the ground until it looked like a rabid buffalo had churned up the soil. “Sara, what is troubling you?”

Normally, I would have denied any troubles in favor of more kissing, but that’s pretty hard to do when the evidence is right in front of you. “Do… do you think it’s weird that Dad just showed up? I mean, we’ve been looking for him forever, and he just walks right up to the front door?”

Micah pursed his lips, taking a deep breath before he replied. “Weird? Perhaps. However, your father’s return is an unprecedented turn of good fortune. And on our wedding day, no less.”

“I love it when you say that.”

“What?”

“‘Our wedding day.’”

Micah took the stick from me and pulled me to my feet. “Soon, I will be telling you about our wedding night.” He tossed the stick into the stream and tugged me back toward the road and the manor. “Come, my love, my wife, and let me bring you home.”

Excerpt:

A musical laugh sprang free, her happy smile trailing behind, and I was in heaven. “Until you,” she agreed. She squinted one eye and added, “Though you should know, I’m probably gonna be really, really bad at it.”

The expression on her face said she honestly believed it, and I couldn’t wait to prove her wrong. I leaned close to her ear and whispered across her skin, “That’s impossible.”

Peyton’s breath caught in a gasp, and I angled back to see her face.

That’s when the moment changed.

Sounds of the emptying baseball field fell away. The cool air around us kindled. The soft smile on her face faded as she looked into my eyes, shifting her gaze between them to see what I’d do next. Part of me wondered the same thing.  

I’d kissed dozens of girls before. Some I wanted, others purely because I was bored. But I’d never felt anything like this. Anticipation. Want. Fear. Unlike any other kiss I’d ever shared, this one needed to be epic. Girls remembered their first kiss for the rest of their lives, and I had to leave Peyton with something good to cling to later… when I inevitably screwed everything up.

Gauging her reaction, I slowly lowered my head and watched her soft lips part. Adrenaline surged through my veins at the swipe of her tongue. She nodded once, silently giving me permission, then closed her eyes.

Inhaling the scent of sunflowers, I kissed her.   

Soft and sweet. Those two words defined this girl. She tasted like sugar and her sigh was addictive as I brushed her mouth with mine. Again and again. I couldn’t get enough. Her hands clenched my wrists, tugging me closer. I could’ve lived in that moment forever. 

My restless hands memorized the curve of Peyton’s spine, the dip of her waist. Hers slid down my arms and around my back, fisting my shirt before slipping underneath. A jolt of electricity ran over my skin. When her nails raked down my spine, I jerked and groaned into her mouth. She was a fast learner.

I kissed the corners of her triumphant smile, licked the bow of her top lip, and nipped at the bottom one. She sighed again and sank in my arms, matching me kiss for kiss, playful tug for playful tug. And still, I needed more. I’d probably always need more.  

Tilting my head for better access, I grazed her cheeks with my fingertips. Traced the seam of her mouth with my tongue, silently asking for what I wanted. Hoping like hell she’d open up. Her answer was one shy flick. The shiver reached my toes.

No girl had gotten to me like this. Burrowed under my skin, held my interest, or had me thinking about tomorrow. Wishing I could be that guy. I lost myself in the strawberry taste of Peyton’s mouth, the sweet sounds in her throat, and I didn’t fully emerge until hours later. When I did, it was with one thought circling my brain:

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!

What  I say: I read the synopsis for PULL and was like "Ooh hello! A YA sci-fi, time travel book with a guy called Albert all set in Victorian London? Yes please!" Turns out names like Albert don't always equate to Victorian times. It's actually a contemporary sci-fi story. The book isn't really about time travel, more time manipulation...

  

I liked Rosie and appreciated her witty narrative. I did find her a little confusing at times but can't say more without spoiling anything. Albert is intriguing and mysterious. I liked their friendship. I did get a little annoyed about how controlling certain people are. I felt as though Rosie really needed the support after the headache that is her non supportive family.

Albert and his friends were a tight knit, bad ass group, who had a kind of shadowhunter-like vibe, but I didn't completely appreciate them in the same way I do with CC' stories.

It did take a while for the story to get going, but I found myself becoming more involved and invested as the plot developed. The pacing was a little off at times with a bit of an awkward feel, but I enjoyed the story and would like to know what happens next. I liked the sci-fi elements and the descriptions of 'pulling' really helped to explain the phenomena. As a Brit and latin student I appreciated all the British-isms and sneaky use of latin words.

Review - Bookishly Ever After

What I say: Bookishly Ever After was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I was initially drawn to the synopsis - you've gotta love a bookworm, right? Well kinda, sorta, sometimes... 

Phoebe/Feebs is more comfortable with her favourite book boyfriends than real life interaction with guys. I can absolutely understand this and I did really enjoy the snippets from her favourite books, but I did find it hard to connect with her. I've read several books that follow a 'story with a story' style trope and I did like the parts were when she drew upon book experiences to help her deal with real life situations. BUT it was though a little difficult at times to work out whether Phoebe was being herself or another character.

The awkward flirting and secret crushes did make me smile but I wanted to know more about Phoebe. I liked the secondary characters and Em made me smile. Her constant boy dramas reminded me of one of my friends when we were teens.

I have to admit the drama with Dev took a long time to develop and I did find my mind wandering along the way. It took a long time for anything to happen, but I did like Dev and wanted them to move past the friend zone. I enjoyed Phoebe's awkwardness Phoebe when thinking about Dev, but the pacing just seemed a little slow at times.

I'm aware I'm sounding a little negative but this really isn't how I felt about the entire book because I did enjoy Phoebe's story. Her awkward antics made me laugh. Overall I liked the story, I just didn't love it.
