Am Reading - Archer's Voice

I don't get as much time to re-read some of my favs as I'd like, but I think it's important to spend the time with beloved book every now and again.

With it celebrating it's US paperback release this week, I thought it was the perfect excuse to spend some more time with Archer...

Archer's Voice
by Mia Sheridan

What they say: When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Maine, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer's Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

Goodreads it!

Read my original review here!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:

  • "I was already brilliant. I just needed some world experience. I needed Thor."
  • "I want to be able to love you more than I fear losing you, and I don't know how. Teach me, Bree."
  • Sometimes an understanding silence was better than a bunch of meaningless words.
  • How do you teach a man who has lost everything, not to fear it happening again?

YA Cover Love

#YADecember loves covers!

As much as I don't like to judge a book purely based on its cover, I have to admit I do love a good cover.

For #YADecember I'm highlighting five of my favourites...

Watch the Sky
by Kirsten Hubbard

Add to Goodreads

I love the simplicity of this cover - it's beautiful.

The signs are everywhere, Jory's stepfather, Caleb, says. Red leaves in the springtime. Pages torn from a library book. All the fish in the aquarium facing the same way. A cracked egg with twin yolks. Everywhere and anywhere. And because of them Jory's life is far from ordinary. He must follow a very specific set of rules: don't trust anyone outside the family, have your works at the ready just in case, and always, always watch out for the signs. The end is coming, and they must be prepared.

School is Jory's only escape from Caleb's tight grasp, and with the help of new friends Jory begins to explore a world beyond his family's farm. As Jory's friendships grow, Caleb notifies Jory's mother and siblings that the time has come for final preparations.

They begin an exhausting schedule digging a mysterious tunnel in anticipation of the disaster. But as the hold gets deeper, so does the family's doubt about whether Caleb's prophecy is true. When the stark reality of his stepfather's plans becomes clear, Jory must choose between living his own life or following Caleb, shutting his eyes to the bright world he's just begun to see.

Review - Pucked

Pucked
by Helena Hunting

What they say: With a famous NHL player for a step-brother, Violet Hall is well acquainted with the playboy reputation many hockey stars come with. She’s smart enough to steer clear of those hot, well-built boys with unparalleled stamina. That is until she meets the legendary team captain—Alex Waters.

Violet isn’t interested in his pretty, beat-up face, or his rock-hard six-pack abs. But when Alex inadvertently obliterates Violet’s previous misapprehension regarding the inferior intellect of hockey players, he becomes more than just a hot body with a face to match.

In what can only be considered a complete lapse in judgment, Violet finds out just how good Alex is with the hockey stick in his pants. But what starts out as a one-night stand, quickly turns into something more. Post-night of orgasmic magic, Alex starts to call, and text, and e-mail and send extravagant—and quirky—gifts, making him difficult to ignore, and even more difficult not to like.

The problem is, the media portrays Alex as a total player, and Violet doesn’t want to be part of the game.

What I say: I held off reading Pucked for a few weeks after release because of the hype. I don't know about you, but I've had a few bad experiences where I've had overly high expectations of a hyped book or author and then been hugely disappointed by the book. I really shouldn't have worried about the hype surrounding Pucked because it really is as funny, witty and as charming as the MANY other readers have suggested!

First up, I'm going to mention that the book isn't for younger readers because it's smutty, like really smutty, but in a hilarious and very modern way. Secondly I'm going to point out that even though it's smutty it's well written. I loved the many cultural reference's and modern colloquialisms Helena Hunting incorporates into the story. If you don't like naughty humour in your contemporary romances then this probably isn't the story for you. BUT if you're like me and you like a side order of dirty humour, then Pucked is probably a good purchase for you.

It probably should be noted that I cackled, snorted and yes 'laughed out loud' reading this one. It's something of a rarity with contemporary romances, but I loved both the main characters. Violet and Alex were a constant joy to read about. As somebody who is also prone to word vomit I loved Violet's lack of brain-to-mouth filter. I also appreciated Alex's nervous babbling, and that however confident he many be in many aspects of his life, Violet still managed to make him nervous.

It's no secret that I'm pretty anti insta-love or even insta-lust (don't worry I won't spoil anything) but I liked the development of their relationship and how Violet was always clear on not rushing certain things. She's pretty level headed (except for when it comes to resisting Alex) but her Beaver and MC commentary was hilarious.

I found Alex  extremely endearing. Yes he makes a few mistakes but I do love a guy who apologises in style. I have to admit I didn't think the event was as bad as I had expected but I could understand why Violet was so annoyed.

The secondary characters were a fab and eclectic mix. I loved Buck, Charlene and Skye. Violet's Mum, Skye, was gloriously inappropriate - I'm never going to worry about my Mum's lack of boundaries again after reading some of the things Skye does.

I think it's Buck's story up next but I'd also like to read about Darren and the rest of the hockey team - Go Hawks! I'll never be able to look at a cuddly toy in quite the same way and I do like a gal who is crafty... So.Many.Euphemisms!

4.5 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilers quotes:

  • Buck is mammoth, like a yeti. A huge, perverted, hairy whore of a yeti.
  • I want to be his love slave. An image of me in a black corset wearing a collar with a leash attached to it pops into my head. Maybe stupid Lydia was right to cut the smut from the book club for a while.
  • "Do you have some kind of... disorder? Like elephantiasis of the penis or something?"
  • I'm so pucked. There'd better be a support group for hockey hookers. I'm going to need it after tonight.

Top YA quote of the Day

Frostbite - Vampire Academy #2
by Richelle Mead

"I think you smoke them so you have something to do while thinking up your next witty line."
He choked on the smoke, caught between inhaling and laughing. "Rose Hathaway, I can't wait to see you again. If you're this charming while tired and annoyed, and this gorgeous while bruised and in ski clothes, you must be devastating at your peak."
"If by 'devastating' you mean that you should fear for your life, then yeah. You're right." I jerked open the door. "Good night, Adrian."
"I'll see you soon."
"Not likely. I told you, I'm not into older guys."
I walked into the lodge. As the door closed, I just barely heard him call behind me, "Sure, you aren't."

Dublin You Were Awesome & Swag Giveaway!

Warning: This post is mainly me fan-girling & posting random pics! But keep reading as there's a giveaway...!

I'm back from the Dublin Authors Signing 2014 event - it was amazing!! I had a fab time meeting the authors, bloggers and readers who had made the trip to Dublin.

In my head I was going to play it cool, be knowledgeable, friendly and chilled. In reality I was so excited about meeting some of my favourite authors and getting to meet some great new ones that I lost my half-signed keepsake card (I did get another one see above)  whilst being uber awkward around Sylvia Day.

I then fan-girled around Jay Crownover so much I forgot to get her to sign NASH (I did get the rest of Jay's books signed though.) I then squeaked at Cora Carkmack about how I was taking part in her All Broke Down cover reveal that day! And told Abbi Glines how great her accent is - so yeah I defo didn't play it cool!

Each and every single one of the authors = really chatty and kind. They gave me extra swag and goodies to use in giveaways on the blog. The first giveaway is listed at the end of this post (please check the T&C's before entering)!

I had 3 authors (Jay, Kristen & Cora) comment on how Zili (which btw is a nickname, pronounced Zee-Leigh) would make a great character name. Jay & Cora even signed my books with comments about my name (I love them)! I'm sure they were just being nice, but they're very welcome to use the name for a character anytime!

I dragged my Mum along & we stayed in Dublin for 3 days - I think I managed to make a fan-mum out of her! A big thanks to Alison and the team at Book Addict for a great day :)
