Want to Read - The Harm Tree

I picked up a signed edition of this recent release at YALC and as soon as I have the time will be reading this one...  Also the author Rose Edwards had her hair dyed to match the colours on the front cover!

The Harm Tree
by Rose Edwards

What they say: An epic fantasy set in a world still recovering from one war, and on the brink of another.

The resistance is rising and dark forces stir to take back what was once theirs. Belief in the ancient gods runs strong—the sacrificial Harm Tree still stands.

You’re too young to remember why we needed heroes. You should be glad…
Nine years ago, two princes waged a bloody civil war for the right to rule Arngard. The younger prince took the throne and outlawed the ancient beliefs, but some wounds don’t heal. New religion replaced the barbaric traditions and finally, there’s peace.

Torny and Ebba are friends. Sent away by their families, they work together and watch out for each other. Too young to remember the war that tore apart the kingdom, Torny dreams of the glorious warriors of old, while Ebba misses her family, despite the darkness she left behind.

But when a man is murdered on the street and Torny finds herself in possession of a dangerous message, the two friends must tread separate paths. These will lead them through fear, through grief, to the source of their own power and to the gates of death itself.

As Torny and Ebba are used as tools for the opposing factions of the war, a deep power is ignited in them both. Can they uncover their own strength to finally heal the wounds of a nation?

Whatcha Reading Wednesday - Rivers of London

This week I'm reading this fav and celebrating the signed edition I picked up at YALC!

Rivers of London
by Ben Aaronovitch

What they say: Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Who is Going to YALC?

Let's get YALC-ed baby!!!

The Young Adult Literature Convention (at London film and Comic Con) starts Friday 26th July and runs to Sunday 28th July.

It's a fab event where you get to meet authors, publishers, PR companies, mix with other fans and pick up some pretty awesome merchandise!

The other HUGE bonus for me is that YALC is held as part of LFCC so you get entry into the main event to see your fav comic, movie, tv and cult heroes as well.

I'm a big fan of cosplay so I love any excuse to dress up. The only problem is deciding what to dress up as...

Am Reading - The Hazel Wood

In a clear sign that I may have returned with too many books/ARCS from book/author events last year, I complained about not receiving a galley of The Hazel Wood only to find this beauty on one of my bookshelves last night. Needless to say I started reading it straight away (after organising my book haul of course)!

The Hazel Wood
by Melissa Albert

What they say: Releases 30th Jan (8th Feb in some areas).

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.
