Vampire Addiction - Review Tour

Vampire Addiction
by Eva Pohler

Teen Fantasy / YA Paranormal
Date Published: 12/27/2014
Publisher: Green Press / Eva Pohler

Some call them “tramps.” In Greek, they are called vrykolakas, or “vryks,” which sometimes gets translated to “freaks.” They are the vampires of Athens, created centuries ago by the Maenads. They live in caves beneath the acropolis, without economic resources and according to rules imposed on them by the Olympians. They are forbidden from turning humans into vampires, which happens when all of the blood is drained; however, they are allowed to drink from a willing mortal. Some mortals are willing because a vampire bite will infect the body for six hours, and, during that time, the mortal has the powers of flight, invisibility, strength, speed, x-ray vision, and mind control. Such great power can become irresistible, though dangerous and addicting to mortals.
As seventeen-year-old Gertie, studying abroad from New York, uncovers the unfathomable secrets of this ancient city, she unwittingly becomes a catalyst in an uprising led by Dionysus, the god of wine and lord of the vampires.

What I say: I'm a big fan of anything related to ancient mythology, particularly Greek mythology so I jumped at the chance to read a YA Greek mythology meets vampire crossover.

I'm going to be completely honest and admit that I did find it difficult to warm to Gertie in the beginning. At times she came across as ungrateful, because she moans a lot! I did find myself softening towards her but she did fall into what I often see described these days as the 'Bella Swan complex'. Gertie is almost defined by how two powerful young men see her. She finds herself in a supernatural battle between the two guys who are quite controlling. I just want to point out that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this type of character and I was a big Twilight fan. However, I will always be slightly uncomfortable with a character who instantly becomes obsessed with a guy or guys, and who is at risk of loosing her identity. The good thing in Vampire Addiction is that Eva Pohler highlights these type of unhealthy romances, even going as far as discussing the humans addicted to vampire bites. It's also worth nothing that Gertie herself is aware of the potential risks and knows not to get addicted. Whether she succeeds is for you to decide.

Once Gertie comes to terms with her situation she gets more involved with the family and Greek life. She falls headfirst into the romance of the mythology and begins to find her inner strength. It's definitely worth staying with Gertie, allowing her the time to move past all the teen angst and drama of being sent away from home.

There's a lot to take in but I really enjoyed the blending of Greek mythology and various vampire lore. Pohler does a great job of twisting the rules, reworking classical studies and creating her own mythology which is a clever combination of the two.

As the first book in the series Vampire Addiction works well in terms of world building. So although I didn't always fully empathise with the characters, it'll be interesting to see what happens next. I'd really like to see more of Hector who was my favourite character by far.

3 Loved the World building Stars in my Sky!

Cover Reveal - RIVETED

Jay Crownover’s RIVETED (Saints of Denver #3) is coming February 14th 2017!

Check out the amazing cover and preorder your copy today!

#YallNeedChurch #LoveIsStrongerThanFear #Riveted

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

Use Somebody is Beck Anderson's newest Hollywood standalone!

Releasing October 8th.  Now Available for Pre-order!

Blurb:
Jeremy King, Hollywood über-agent to the stars, knows that sharks gotta swim. He’s one of them, after all. He’s never met a deal he couldn’t strike or an argument he couldn’t win. LA is his kind of town—they both never stop moving.

So when his friend and client, movie star Andrew Pettigrew, invites him on a “man-cation” to the wilds of Idaho for a little fly-fishing, Jeremy’s not so sure. He might not have cell service. There’s no way there’ll be any supermodels to woo. And his idea of the great outdoors is a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in his Tesla Model S—moose definitely do not factor into the picture.

Fitting then that because of a moose, he meets Macy Shea Summerlin, the best fly-fishing guide on the South Fork. Jeremy’s surprised and tantalized, but Macy isn’t having any of his alpha male posturing. She gives as good as she gets, and she knows how to throw a mean right hook.

As the two of them get tangled up in each other’s lives, both Jeremy and Macy must come to terms with winning and losing and letting love in. And Jeremy has to find the answer to his own question: Is he simply “using” Macy or could he really “use” someone like her? Find out in Use Somebody, book 3 of the Fix You series.

Excerpt:

We stand in a ridiculous line (my opinion) to grab a coffee at the original Starbucks, and Macy pulls out her phone.
“Now we’ll take our coffees and go drink them somewhere cool.” She pulls me along back the way we came, hops on the Link again, headed back toward the hotel.
“Where is this cool place?” I fight the urge to take the reins. She’s lost. We’re headed nowhere.
“Just wait. It’s gonna be cool. I asked the concierge about it before you got up, too, so it’s not just me and Google that thinks so.”
We walk a short block in the opposite direction of the hotel, past the gleaming steel and glass public library, which Macy takes several pictures of as we walk.
We cross the street, and she walks up to the front doors of a grey stone modern office building.
“What?” I feel a little unsettled. I’m the one who does the surprising.
“Trust me.” She takes my hand and pulls me in through the revolving doors.
We get on the elevator, and she presses the button for the seventh floor.
“Okay.” I stand next to her, but I’m concentrating mostly on the way it feels to have her hand on mine. I think about her lips on mine, her hips against mine…
And then she coughs. It’s two, quick coughs, but there’s that rattle again.
And my mind’s back on the business of keeping her well, keeping her safe.
We get off the elevator. She looks like a kid with a great secret. “Just wait. This is so cool.”
“You haven’t been here, how do you know?”
“Don’t be a crank. Nobody likes the stick in the mud.”
“Fine.”
She pulls me through another set of chrome and glass doors.
And yeah, she’s right. It’s pretty cool.
So apparently Macy from Teton County, Idaho, has discovered the rooftop park hidden in the middle of downtown Seattle. And it’s gorgeous. She hands me my coffee and walks over to the railing. The sun is out, and the water and the waterfront is laid out in front of us.
“There’s the Space Needle! We’re going there later today. After dinner.”
I laugh. “Are you at least going to let me pick a spot for dinner?”
“Do you want to?” She doesn’t look like she wants me to.
“There’s a great place I know, and it’s a short walk from the hotel.”
“Fine.” She takes a sip from her coffee and looks out over the view.
I kiss her on the cheek again. “Don’t sulk.”
She turns and kisses me full-on, on the lips, for the briefest possible moment, before pulling away and facing out to the view again. “I’m not.” I taste mint and feel sparks down to the base of my spine.
Then she smiles the slyest, crookedest grin I’ve seen. I haven’t seen her smile like that.
And I grin back.

What I say: I'm going to call Deliverance a New Adult, supernatural road trip. With Kristina's and Tiger's story it's very difficult to discuss the plot without giving anything away so I'm going to keep this as vague as possible. Tiger is a dark and mysterious 'monster' bred in captivity. His escape forces Kristina to go from helpful farm girl to unwillingly paranormal fugitive.

I really liked Tiger. His innocence and naivety never failed to make me smile. It took longer for me to warm to Kristina as I found her moaning at the beginning little hard to like. BUT I did understand her doubts, and as the relationship between her and Tiger developed I found myself liking her more and more.

I liked the secondary characters and in particular Grandma Rose. She's hilarious - I definitely wouldn't want to cross her!  I wanted to know more about Castiel, although I have to admit his name did keep making me think of Cas from Supernatural.

Deliverance is like directory or who's who of paranormal creatures. I'd love to know more about the older vampires and what happened to a certain someone...

3.5 Intrigued Stars in my Sky!
